Impact of Input (fertilizer and Irrigation) Subsidy on Boro Rice Production in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in northern district of Rangpur with the objectives of find out the benefit of (level of use, productivity and profitability) input subsidy at farm level and identify the problems of timely getting input by the farmers. Data were collected from 40 sample farmers through interviewing using predesigned questionnaire. Results indicated that subsidized diesel operated rice farm obtained higher yield mainly because of timely adequate amount of irrigation water application in the crop field. Moreover, they received comparatively higher gross return because of higher paddy yield and higher paddy output price. On the other hand, non subsidized diesel operated rice farm received lower gross return and BCR compared to subsidized diesel operated farm. Sixty seven percent farmers opined that chemical fertilizer price is high and rest of the farmers also opined that, there is no problem for timely getting chemical fertilizer.

Objectives:

Identify the problems of timely getting input by the farmers; and
Assess the farmers’ opinion about present subsidy program.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in northern district of Rangpur. Two villages namely; Islampur and Tokeya kesobpur were selected purposively from the Mithapukur upazila. Twenty farmers from each village were selected randomly. Thus, a total of 40 sample farmers were interviewed using pre-designed questionnaire. After collection of data, necessary editing was done. Descriptive statistics were employed in analyzing the data.
