Estimation of Genetic Coefficient of Some Rice Varrities

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To estimated the genetic coefficient of some popular varieties to be used in modeling studies an experiment has started from 15 December 2010 and will be continued upto 15 December 2011 in the BRRI farm, Gazipur. This is a year round study. Six varieties including Photo insensitive, sensitive (strong and weak)and mega varieties were considered for this study. Being an weakly photo period sensitive variety, BR11 could have some flowering but the yield had been affected significantly.The yields of these varieties at different dates were observed.

Objectives:

To estimated the genetic coefficient of some popular varieties to be used in modeling studies.

Methodology:

Six varieties viz. BRRI dhan11, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan46, BRRI dhan47 and IR64 were considered for this study. Thirty-day-old seedling was transplanted at 20x20-cm spacing for first set and every 15 days interval; it was done for another set. A Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) was used with three replications. Phenological development, yield and yield components were measured and grain yield was adjusted at 14% moisture level.

Achievement/Findings:

Basic vegetative phase and photoperiod sensitive phase, degree day and other relevant physiological attributes will be estimated from the study. We have included Photo insensitive, sensitive (strong and weak), mega varieties and IR64 from IRRI as a requirement as control. Strongly photoperiod sensitive variety BRRI dhan46 has not yet flower even it was first transplanted on 30 January. Being an weakly photo period sensitive variety, BR11 could have some flowering but the yield had been affected significantly. The other variety showed their sensitivity in phenological development and yield too. It is expected that their flowering will be affected only due to cold. The yields of these varieties at different dates were observed.
