Field Trial of Trichoderma Based Bio-fertilizer Formulation and Chemical in Controlling Foot and Rot Rot Disease of Groundnut

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out during 2009-10 in the field at Hazirhat, Noakhali to test the efficacy of Trichoderma based biofertilizer against foot and root rot of groundnut. Provax-200 and Trichoderma harzianum inocula were evaluated against root rot in farmers' field condition. Both the treatments reduced foot and root rot severity and increased yield compared to natural control plot. Provax-200 showed lower mean severity index (2.28) followed by Trichoderma (2.57), control (2.87). Highest nut yield was achieved from the treatment Trichoderma (1.90 t/ha) followed by Provax – 200 (1.57 t/ha). Lowest yield was recorded in natural infested control plot (1.10 t/ha).

Objectives:

To evaluate Trichoderma species as biological control agent against foot and root rot of groundnut

Methodology:

The field experiment was carried out during the years 2009-10 in a field artificially infested with Sclerotium rolfsii located at the Hazirhat, Noakhali. Groundnut seeds were soaked for 1 min with Trichoderma species conidial suspension, the seeds were then air dried in laminar flow hood. For the control, untreated seeds were used and chemical treatment like provax @ 2g per kg seed. Field trial was arranged in a randomized complete block design, with three replicates per treatment. The plot size for each replication was 2 m X 2.1 m (4.2 sq m) with four rows per plot. The seeds (Dhaka-1) used in the biocontrol experiment were previously treated with provax to ensure good plant emergence. Plant emergence in plots was evaluated 23 DAS. The plots were hand harvesting for groundnut yield 20 weeks after seeding (May 15, 2010). Weight of kernals of 20 plants from two central rows was recorded and the roots of these plants were examined to estimate disease severity. Roots were rated for Sclerotium rolfsii root rot symptoms following a five class rating scale (0= no lesions, 1= small root lesions, 2= central root lesions, 3= large root lesions, 4= dead plant) and expressed as the mean disease severity index (MSI). MSI was calculated from these ratings according to the formula: MSI= [(n X 0) + (n X 1) + ……..+ (n X 4)] N-1 Where n is the number of plants corresponding to each disease rating (0-4) and N is the total number observed. Evaluations of disease were performed on three blocks. Each block contained approximately 20 groundnut plants. The frequency of healthy plants was expressed as the percentage of plants with no or slight symptoms of infection (classes 1+2). Yield and plant population data calculated an average basis.

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum germination of seed was recorded in Provax treated plot and close to Trichoderma harzianum inoculums treated plot and lowest in control plot. The percentage of healthy plants is higher (71%) in the plot where seed was treated with Provax followed by the plot where Trichoderma harzianum inoculum applied in furrow (69%) and lowest in control plot (60%) and MSI was higher in control plot (2.97) followed by Trichoderma harzianum inoculums treated plot (2.57). Provax treated plot gave moderate MSI (2.28). The maximum number of mature nut per plant (25) was obtained from Trichoderma harzianum treated plot followed Provax treated plot (24). The lowest was observed in control plot (20). Similar trend was found in nut yield. There are no significant variations in nut yield between chemical and Trichoderma treated plot but both treatments gave significantly higher (P=0.05) nut yield compared to control. In case of 100 kernel weight, Trichoderma treated plot (45.78g) produced higher weight per100 kernels which is statistically identical with chemical treated (44.83) and control plot (42.99) as well.
