Pest and Natural Enemy Incidence in Light Trap

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Gazipur had the highest number of catches of both insect pests and natural enemies in light trap. Green leafhopper (GLH), brown planthopper (BPH), white backed planthopper (WBPH), yellow stemborer (YSB) and long horned cricket (LHC) and green mired bug (GMB), carabid beetle(CDB), staphylinid beetle (STPD) & lady bird beetle (LBB) dominated the pest and predator population. YSB and rice leaf folder(RLF) populations were found higher in light trap catches of Barisal.

Objectives:

To study the pest and their natural enemy incidence patterns in light trap and to create a database

Methodology:

Rice insect pests and their natural enemies were monitored throughout the year by light trap from July 2005 to June 2006 at BRRI headquarter, Gazipur and BRRI regional stations at Comilla, Barisal, Rajshahi and Habigonj.

Achievement/Findings:

The incidence of insect pests was highest at Gazipur followed by Barisal, Comilla, Habigonj and Rajshahi. Among the pests the incidence of GLH, BPH, WBPH, YSB and LHC were higher than the other insect pests (Table 6). Gazipur had higher number of GLH, BPH, WBPH, LHC and that of YSB and RLF population in Barisal. The populations of GLH and LHC peaked in October- November and in April- May in Gazipur. YSB population peaked in November in Barisal. A small peak was also observed in Comilla and Gazipur in the month of September and November respectively. Maximum number of natural enemies were recorded at Gazipur followed by Comilla. Green mirid bug (GMB), carabid beetle (CDB), staphylinid beetle (STPD) and Ladybird beetle (LBB) dominated the predatory arthropod populations. Green mirid bug and CDB, STPD and LBB were higher in Gazipur, Comilla and Rajshahi respectively. The natural enemies peaked in October-November and April-May as they depend on their prey population.
