Survey and Monitoring of Hemipteran Bugs in Rice Fields at BRRI Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A weekly survey was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur throughout the year to know status of hemipteran bugs at BRRI farm, Gazipur. Ten species of hemipteran bugs (Leptocorisa oratorius, L. acuta, Pygomenida bengalensis, Eysarcoris sp., E. ventralis, Cletus trigonus, Eocanthecona sp., Pachybrachius pacificus, Nezara viridula and Andrallus spinidens) were found in different habitats. Among them nine species were found in all the habitats (seedbed, rice and ratoon). and Zincrona sp. was found on ratoons only. Transplanted Aus rice harboured more hemipteran bugs than that of other habitats. The number of L. oratorius was very high (19.82 /week) compared to other hemiptaran bug in transplanted Aus rice. The presence of P. bengalensis was observed in all habitats throughout the year. Boro ratoon had highest (7.67/week) number of P. bengalensis than Aus ratoon. The population was low in both Aus and Boro seedbed. Another hemipteran bug P. pacificus was also observed during the study period. The population was very low and only observed in transplanted Aus rice.the Aus rice had the highest number of hemipteran bugs with a domination of Leptocorisa oratorius. Among the 10 bug species Pygomenida bengalensis was noticed in all the habitats throughout the year but Zincrona sp. was found only on ratoons.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The abundance and incidence pattern of different hemipteran bugs in seedbed, rice field and ratoon were studied at BRRI farm, Gazipur during Aus and T. Aman 2005. Weekly sampling (100 complete sweeps) was made from each habitat and the collected bugs were identified. The number of each species collected were also recorded.
