Control of Seed-borne Mycoflora of Sunflower with Botanicals

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

All the Plant extracts affect significantly over control on the incidence and germination percentage of both BARI sunflower 2 and kirani Varity of sunflower. In both varieties Dhutura and Garlic extract significantly reduced Alternaria alternata compared with other plant extracts. Botrytis cinerea, Curvularia lunata and Fusarium semitectum, six plants extracts reduced percent seed-borne infection. Number of pathogen counted from seeds of both varieties of sunflower was lower when the seed was treated with plant extracts.

Objectives:

To find out suitable botanicals for effective reduction of seed- borne mycoflora sunflower.

Methodology:

Seed samples of two sunflower verities viz. BARI sunflower 2 and Kironi were collected from Oilseed Division, BARI. Four seed samples of each variety were collected. Seeds were treated with crude extracts of different plant species. Plant species used for seed treatment Sl. No. Common Name Scientifi Name Plant Parts used 1) Bishkathali Polygonum hydropiper Leaves 2) Dhatura Datura metel Leaves 3) Garlic Allium sativum Cloves 4) Neem Azadirachta indica Leaves 5 )Nishinda Vitex trifolia Leaves 6) Tobacco Nicotiana tabacum Leaves. A total of 250 gm of the selected plant/plant parts were taken separately in an electric blender and blended with equal volume of water. The pulverized mass was squeezed through 3 folds fine cotton cloth. The filtrate thus obtained was used as a crude extract for seed treatment by seeds dipping separately. One hundred seeds for each sample were dipped for 24 hr in each crude extract replicated by other samples of a variety. The treated and untreated control seeds were tested by blotter method following the International Rules for Seed Testing. In this method, three pieces of filter paper (Whatmann no. 1) were placed at the bottom of 9 cm diameter glass Petri dish after soaking in sterilized water. Seeds treated with plant extracts were taken randomly and placed on the moist filter paper in 10 replicated Petri dishes setting 10 seeds per plate. The seeds were then kept at 22 ±2ºC. After incubation the fungi grown on the seeds were identified under the stereo-microscope following the keys of Malone and Musket (1964), Booth (1971) and Mathur and Kongsdal (2003). The treated and untreated control seeds were analyzed for detection of seed-borne fungi. The means for all treatments were calculated and analyses of variance of all the characters were performed by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

In conclusion it can be revealed that after seed treatment with plant extracts decreased the total and individual incidence of fungi and increased germination percentage over control. Among the plant extracts garlic and dhatura extract performed better.
