Evaluation of Imidacloprid Against Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (tylcv) Disease on Different Tomato Varieties Suggesting an Management Package for Late Season Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Among BARI released promising varieties BARI Hybrid Tomato 4 in summer and BARI Tomato 6 in winter performed very positively in respect of disease potential and the yield potential as well, against Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) disease when treated with imidacloprid group insecticides namely admire @ 0.5 ml/l along with seed treatment with confider @ 5 g chemicals/ kg seed. A significant percentage of disease decrease increased a significant level of marketable yield which had to have a significant unit gross return for per unit production cost not only in the research field but also in the farmers’ practice.

Objectives:

To suggest a management package of an effective chemical on a good tolerant variety both for summer and winter season,
To have the maximum economic benefit in a participatory approach

Methodology:

For summer cultivation, BARI Hybrid tomato 4 was sown on the first of July, 2008-09 and for winter season, three promising varieties of tomato namely- BARI Tomato 6, BARI Tomato 14 and BARI Tomato 3 from HRC, were sown on the research field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Joydebpur and on the OFRD site for farmer’s field at Dhirasrom, in paired plot technique with 10 replicated plots during November, 2009-10 and 60 cm row to row and 40 cm plant to plant distance. The conventional agronomic practices were followed to keep the crop in good condition. The treatment was- soil and foliar sprays of imidacloprid, from 15 days age of plants in summer and from 25 days age of plants in winter, @ 0.5 ml/l along with seed treatment @ 5g imidacloprid/ kg seed, up to flowering stage. Data expressing disease potential and yield potential were recorded on different parameters viz. disease incidence (%), Disease severity (PDI), yield (t/ha), % disease decrease, % yield increase etc. and data were analyzed by “t” test with MSTAT-C program.. Disease severity data were recorded based on a rating scale by Lapidot et al. (2001). TYLCV symptom severity rating: Symptom development was evaluated according to the following scale: 0 = no visible symptoms; 1 = very slight yellowing of leaflet margins on apical leaf; 2 = some yellowing and minor curling of leaflet ends; 3 = a wide range of leaf yellowing, curling, and cupping, with some reduction in size, yet plants continue to develop; and 4 = very severe plant stunting and yellowing, pronounced leaf cupping and curling; plants stop growth (Lapidot et al. 2001)

Achievement/Findings:

On an average more than 80 % yield was increased due to less severity of the disease in the plot where the disease incidence was less. For winter season at plant pathology research field Significant (at 1 % level of probability) reduction in disease incidence (%) was observed in between imidacloprid treated and nontreated plots in case of all the tomato varieties in plant pathology field and little difference was recorded in farmers field trial. The disease incidence (%) was higher in some control plots in all the varieties than that of treated plots. The severity effect of the treatment was hidden behind it. The unit gross return against per unit cost of production was also significant (at 1 % level of probability) in all the treated plots as compared to control.
