Efficacy of Different Trico-compost for Controlling Rhizome Rot of Turmeric

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Abstract The experiment was carried out at Spices Research Centre, Shibgonj, Bogra, during the period from April 2009 to February 2010 to find out the efficacy of different trico-compost for controlling rhizome rot of turmeric. Four different treatments viz. T₁= NDS Trico-compost (T. virens) + 50% fertilizer dose, T₂= BARI Trico-compost (T. hargianum) + 50% fertilizer dose, T₃= Ridomil spray + Full fertilizer dose (100%) and T₄= Control (only full fertilizer dose) were used in this study. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Per cent disease infection was less (4.99) in the treatment T₃(Ridomil spray). It was also found that treatment T₃ showed the highest yield (36.43 t/ha) followed by treatment T₂ (BARI trico-compost) and the lowest yield (28.33 t/ha) as well as the highest per cent of disease infection (7.77) was obtained in the treatment T₄(Control)

Objectives:

To find out the effectiveness of trico-compost to control the rhizome rot disease of turmeric.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, BARI, Bogra, during the period from April 2009 to February 2010. Advanced line of turmeric (T091) was planted on 6 May, 2009 in plots of 3.5 m x 2 m with a spacing of 50 cm from row to row and 25 cm from plant to plant. The Trichoderma compost was applied in the treatment plots before 10 days of turmeric planting. After application of the compost, the plot was supplied with adequate amount of water for quick decomposition. The design was RCBD with three (3) replications. The treatments were as follows: T₁= NDS Trichocompost (T. virens) + 50% fertilizer dose T₂= BARI Trichocompost (T. hargianum) + 50% fertilizer dose T₃= Ridomil Gold MZ-45 spray + Full fertilizer dose (100%) T₄= Control (only full fertilizer dose) In case of chemical (Ridomil Gold MZ-45) treatment (T₄), rhizomes of turmeric were dipped in ridomil gold solution for 30 minutes before sowing and soil was drenched with ridomil gold solution at 15 days interval when the symptom first appeared. Different cultural management practices were done as recommendation. Data were collected on disease incidence. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and the means were separated by DMRT for interpretation of the results. The crop was harvested on 10 March, 2010.

Achievement/Findings:

The effect of different trico-compost on per cent disease infection of rhizome rot/soft rot of turmeric was presented in Table-1. The treatments have significant effect on plant height and percent disease infection. Among the treatments, T3 (Ridomil spray) showed the lowest (4.99) % of mortality of plant per plot followed by the treatment T2 (BARI tric-ocompost) which is statistically similar to T1 (NDS trico-compost) and the highest (7.77%) was found in T4 (Control). The highest yield (36.43 t/ ha) was obtained from the treatment T3 (Ridomil spray) and the lowest yield (28.33 t/ ha) was found in control treatment (T4) which is statistically similar to the treatment T1 (NDS trico-compost). T3 showed the highest percent (28.59) of yield increase over control treatment (T4). Ridomil Gold Mz-45 and BARI trico-compost were effective in controlling the disease as well as increasing the yield. This was the result of first year. So, the study needs to be continued in the next year for further confirmation of the result.
