Development of Preservation Technique of Jute Leaves in Green Condition for Round the Year Use as Vegetable.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Leaves of fourteen different varieties of jute both from capsularis and olitorius were collected and treated with NaCl in boiled water and dried in the sun. The dried leaves were preserved in air tight plastic or glass or tin or polybags. The preserved leaves remained green for longer time and could be used as vegetables in off season.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum technique to preserve jute leaves in green condition for round the year use as vegetables.

Methodology:

Fourteen different varieties of jute (D-154, CVL-1, CVE-3, CC-45, BJC-83, BJC-7370, BJC-2142, Dwarf type (Red), BJC-2197, BINA Patshak-1, O-4, O-9897, OM-1 and O-72) both from capsularis and olitorius were grown in earthen pots at green house of BJRI. Fresh leaves of different ages (5-20 days old) were collected from different varieties. The collected samples were boiled in salt solution of different concentrations and dried in the sun on polyethylene sheet and then preserved in the air tight tin or glass container or in poly bag and store in the cool and dry place. Side by side untreated dry leaves were also preserved as control.
