Screening of Tossa Jute(corchorus Olitorius L.)germplasm for Male Sterility.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried-out at BJRI,Dhaka and JAES, Manikganj in 2011.Ninety seven germplasms (accessions no.1201- accessions no.1297)were collected and grown at BJRI,Dhaka and JAES, Manikganj.The materials were sown in three meters lengh and two lines for each germplasm maintaining RCBD method.Among them, only ninety five germplasm were germinatedexcluding 1250 and 1281.Early flowering abortion habit and abnormal flowers and flower parts bearing plants were searching closely.Among the lines not a single line was identified as desirable type which is early flowering abortion habit and abnormal flowers and flower parts bearing plants.

Objectives:

To find out male sterile line of tossa jute(Corchorus Olitorius L.) To develop hybrid seed of tossa jute(Corchorus Olitorius L.)

Methodology:

Bangladesh Jute Research Institute has 6060 germplasms of jute(C.Olitorius and C.capsularies) and Kenaf and Mesta both indigenous and exotic origin.These germplasm materials have wider gene pool with different types of biotic and abiotic tolerance characters. Ninety seven germplasms(accessions no.1201- accessions no.1297)were collected and grown at BJRI,Dhaka and JAES, Manikganj in 2011.The materials were sown in three meters lengh and two lines for each germplasm maintaining RCBD method.Proper intercultural and agronomic practices were followed for raising the crop.Among the sowing materials only ninety five germplasm were germinated excluding 1250 and 1281.Early flowering abortion habit and abnormal flowers and flower parts bearing plants were searching closely.Among the lines not a single were identified as desirable type.The sown materials were harvested after 120 days of sowing.

Achievement/Findings:

Male sterile line of flowers sown abnormality in flowering.Morphologically male sterile flowers produced deformed shaped pods or fruits.Generally ms1 and ms2 are produced for ribbon leaf .Among the lines not a single line was identified as desirable type which is early flowering abortion habit and abnormal flowers and flower parts bearing plants.
