Screening of Germplasm for Higher Fibre Yield and Desirable Traits of Tossa Jute.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at JAES, Manikganj in 2011.The materials were sown in three meters lengh and three lines for each germplasm following RCBD method.One hundred germplasms (accessions no.1101-accessions no.1200)along with two varieties O-9897 and BJRI Tossa pat-4(O-72)were were collected and grown at JAES, Manikganj.Among them forty five(1102,1104,1105,1107,1109,1110,1112,1115,1117,1119,1120,1122,1124,1126 ,1129,1130,1132,1133,1135,1137,1139.1141,1143,1144,1147,1150,1153,1155,1158,1161,1163,1165,1168,1170,1173,1176,1179,1180,11831,1187,1189,1192,1194,1196 and 1996) were identified as desirable type which having high plant height,narrow leaves,comparatively lower leaf angle and no diseases symptom on it's body at all.The sown materials were harvested after 120 days of sowing and then desirable type will be used for breeding program.

Objectives:

1.To select genotypes for high yielding and desirable traits from gene bank collection

2.To find out any germplasm which is diseases and pest resistant from collected gene bank

Methodology:

Bangladesh Jute Research Institute has 5936 germplasms of jute and allied fibre yielding crop of both indigenous and exotic origin.These germplasm materials have wider gene pool with different types of biotic and abiotic tolerance characters. One hundred germplasms(accessions no.1101-accessions no.1200)along with two varieties O-9897 and BJRI Tossa pat-4(O-72)were were collected and grown at JAES, Manikganj in 2011.The materials were sown in three meters lengh and three lines for each germplasm following RCBD method.Proper intercultural and agronomic practices were followed for raising the crop.Among the sowing materials only ninety four germplasm were germinated excluding 1123,1134,1140,1149,1187 and 1189,but comperative extra plant height,narrow leaves, lower leaf angle and no diseases symptom on it's bodyis our desired.The sown materials were harvested after 120 days of sowing.
