Efficacy of Different Fungicides in Controlling White Rust of Red Amaranth

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The lowest disease severity was found with the spray of Dithane M-45 followed by Bavistin and Sulpher. Tilt and Contaf appeared to be phytotoxic that had adverse effect on plant growth. Maximum and statistically similar seed yield was obtained from Dithane and Bavistin treated plots.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of foliar application of five different fungicides on the incidence and severity of white rust and seed yield of red amaranth under natural field conditions.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out during 2006-07 crop season at BARI farm, Jaydebpur under the natural field conditions. Seeds of red amaranth variety BARI lal Shak-1 were sown on December 2006 in 1.0 m x 1.0 m plot arranged in RCBD with three replications. Distance between line to line and plant to plant within the line was 30 cm and 10 cm, respectively. Forty two plants in each plot were maintained and allowed for flowering and seed production. Five fungicides namely Tilt 250 EC (0.05%), Contaf (0.05%), Bavistin (0.2%), Sulphur (0.2%) and Dithane M-45 (0.2%) were sprayed at 14 days interval starting from just after disease appearance and continued for three sprays. Special attention was given to complete coverage of growing plants with the fungicides and to avoid drifting of spray materials from one plot of anther.

Results revealed that all the tested fungicides were highly effective in controlling the disease. Lowest disease severity was found with the spray of Dithane M-45 followed by Bavistin and Sulpher. Tilt and Contaf appeared to be phytotoxic that had adverse effect on plant growth. Maximum and statistically similar seed yield was obtained from Dithane and Bavistin treated plots.
