Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Low and high quality jute cutting, caddies and waste face great problem due to their very low price and in making their effective utilization. As the fiber length of these caddies are very shot, not suitable for spinning. But jute felt can be used from these short fibers. For this reason, jute caddies and sliver were used and chemically treated to make them thermally more insulating and finally felt of different thickness and blending ratio were prepared. Felt form treated carpet waste has the higher thermal insulation properties than any other felt made so far. Felt thickness is an important factor which is responsible for thermal resistance. Thermal resistance increases with the increase in sample thickness. In solar cooker jute felt can be used as a substitute of glass wool due to its thermal and insulating properties.

Objectives:

To study the development of non woven fabrics from jute wastes

Methodology:

Jute caddies and carded sliver were made dust free. The samples were then scoured under pressure with soda ash and hostapol at a material liquor ratio 1: 30 and 1:20 for 8 hour and 5 hour respectively. These samples were washed and bleached. After bleaching they were then washed and hydro-extracted in order to increase softness or thermal conductivity. The hydro-extrated sample were treated with lurutex and persulphates about 25 hour and 19 hours at 40 degree and 50 degree celsius respectively. After this treatment the samples were again hydro-extracted and dried. Two types of felt were made from treated jute caddies, 7mm and 14 mm thickness. Three types of felt (100% caddies, jute acrylic and jute viscose) containing 8mm thickness, made from treated carded sliver in the Amin Jute Mill. Thermal properties and acoustic behavior were studied of the prepared felt in the physics department during 1988-89 using standard method at room temperature and humidity condition.

Achievement/Findings:

The felt made from treated jute sliver blended with viscose showed better acoustic behavior compared to other felt. Jute acrylic felt is in the second highest position in case of sound absorb. But their thermal conductivity were lower compared to other felt made from carded sliver. Bleaching action has also resulted in the increase of thermal resistance by an average value of 20%. It was also observed that jute acrylic blended felt are less hygroscopic than 100% jute felt. Thermal resistance increase with the increase of felt thickness. The blended felt (carpet waste and caddies) has the lowest thermal conductivity among all the felt.
