Assessment of Color and Color Change of Jute and Blended Products Due to the Effect of Light Weather for Determining Their Extent of Degradation with Time

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Action of light and weather upon jute and jute products causes their color change along with strength loss for different period of exposure. These defects are usually considered as a great hindrance for the diversify use of jute and jute products. So the optimum level of light exposure and minimum acceptable strength loss are required for better out-put for scientists as well as jute entrepreneurs. In this experiment change of color with various exposure times, tensile properties were studied using different types of jute and jute blended fabrics in the physics department of BJRI during 1987 to 1992. The reflectance value of Novotex blended fabrics increased gradually with higher exposure to light whereas Novotex diamond, Novotex union and Novotex furnishing fabrics have shown decreasing values for the same time of exposure.

Objectives:

1.To find out a correlation between color change and strength loss of jute and jute blended products with period of exposure of light and weather which are needed for their development

2. To studies on the color change effect of jute and jute blended fabrics.

3.To develop methods of dyeing/ printing for jute products.

Methodology:

Four types of Jute blended dyed fabrics were collected from BJRI. Each Novotex fabrics was randomly cut into both warp and weft way for 20 pcs according to the standard size of 2.5X8 square inches and tested in the Xeno tester. The diffuse reflectance value for each piece of the samples was recorded by using Elrepho Calorimeter. In order to determine the change of color of the samples, they were subjected to exposure to the xenon light in the xeno test machine which is a source of artificial light. For a total period of 600 hours during which the exposure materials were cut of the test chamber at every interval of 100 hours exposure with a view to note down the extent of fading. In this way, exposing of the samples to light was continued till 600 hours exposure. Tensile tester and stiffness tester were used to measure the tensile properties and stiffness properties of individual samples (exposed and unexposed) in warp and weft way. During the study, the samples were exposed to light along with International Blue Scale Standard in order to have comparative results with that of Elrepho Calorimeter. The recorded temperature and humidity was 25 to 30 degree celcious and 60-88% respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

The reflectance value of Novotex blended fabrics increased gradually with higher exposure to light whereas Novotex diamond, Novotex union and Novotex furnishing fabrics have shown decreasing values for the same time of exposure. On the other hand The Novotex jute fabrics which were dyed with dyes of various colors were found to get brittle and fade in color due to exposure of fabrics to light for different hours.
