Survey on Post-harvest Diseases of Papaya

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The isolated fungi were Rhizopus stolonifer, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Aspergillus sp., Botryodiplodia theobromae and Fusarium solani in papaya fruit rot. Among the fungi isolated from papaya fruits rots R. stolonifer and Aspergillus sp. were more prevalent as compared to C. gloeosporioides and B. theobromae while F. solani was less frequently observed. One soft rot bacterium was isolated from infected papaya.

Objectives:

To record the post-harvest diseases of papaya occurred particularly at the Chapai Nawabganj district.

Methodology:

Local fruit markets were selected for disease specimen collection. The markets were visited regularly during summer, 2006. Infected specimens were collected and taken to the laboratory for identification. The pathogens were isolated by Tissue Plating Method in PDA medium, purified and identified through consulting the available literature.

Achievement/Findings:

Several fungi were associated with papaya fruit rot. The isolated fungi were Rhizopus stolonifer, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Aspergillus sp., Botryodiplodia theobromae and Fusarium solani. Fruit rot caused by R. stolonifer is characterized by production of irregular, water soaked lesions which gradually enlarge and covered by white and dark brown fungal growth and sporangiophores. The fruits become watery and emit a foul odour. Fruit rot caused by C. gloeosporioides is characterized by brown, superficial discolouration of the skin. The spots soon develop into circular, slightly sunken areas which may be water soaked. The lesions may coalesce and sometimes white mycelial growth appears at the centre of the spot. In older spots, particularly at high humid atmosphere, salmon pink spore masses are developed. Fruit rot incited by F. solani is characterized by small spots on the surface or sometimes on the stem-end of the fruit. Profuse white mycelium was seen at the centre of the spot. Among the fungi isolated from papaya fruits rots R. stolonifer and Aspergillus sp. were more prevalent as compared to C. gloeosporioides and B. theobromae while F. solani was less frequently observed. One soft rot bacterium was isolated from infected papaya.
