An Economic Study of Mango Cultivation in Chapainawabganj and Dinajpur Districts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in two mango growing areas namely Chapainawabganj and Dinajpur district during 2008-09. The findings of the study revealed that mango cultivation was profitable in the study area although return was negative during first four year of cultivation. Yield received by the farmers of Dinajpur was found higher than Chapainawabganj. The BCR was found 2.23 and 2.54 for Chapainawabganj and Dinajpur district respectively. IRR was found 20% for Chapainawabganj and 19% for Dinajpur district. During mango cultivation farmers in the study areas faced different problems like lack of good seedling, insecticides, natural disasters etc.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The present study was conducted in two districts namely Chapainawabganj and Dinajpur during the period of 2008-09. Extensive cultivation of mango was the major criteria for the selection of the study area. Mango growers in the study areas were categorized into six groups, such as, i) 1 to 3 years old mango garden ii) 5 years old mango garden iii) 10 years old iv) 15 years old v) 20 years old and vi) ≥ 25 years old mango garden. Mango garden produces maximum productions at the age of 20 to 35. So, in this study 1 to 40 years was considered as active life span of a mango orchard. Mango growers who sell their product directly to the buyer were considered as population for the study to avoid the system of advance sell. A total of 60 mango growers taking 5 from each group i.e. 30 from each district were selected randomly for interview. Even though data were collected for 1 to 3, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th and ≥ 25th year only, the costs and returns were projected to 40 years, the expected effective life span of mango garden. Mango garden starts production from the 5th year of planting and yield get established at around 10th year. Mango growers in the study area planted a number of varieties such as Lanra, Fazli, Gopalbhog, BARI aam-3 etc in the same garden. For this reason average yield and price per ton was taken to estimate the return. The collected data were edited, summarized and analyzed to achieve the objectives of the study. Mostly tabular method of analysis like percentage, average was used in the study. For measuring capital productivity, costs and returns were discounted at 10% rate of interest. The BCR, NPV and IRR in mango cultivation were calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Cost of mango production was found higher in 5 year old garden (Tk.1, 00009) followed by 15 year old garden in Chapainawabganj district. The total cost of production for 20 year old mango garden was Tk. 93,964/ha while it was Tk. 93597/ha for 15 year old garden. The average yield of mango was found higher in 20 year old garden (288 ton/ha) followed by 25 year old garden in Chapainawabganj district. Gross return was higher for 20 years old garden in Chapainawabganj (Tk 3, 88598 / ha.) and Dinajpur (Tk. 459266 /ha.) district respectively. On an average, net return was found higher for 15 years old garden. To calculate the BCR, NPV and IRR the costs and returns were discounted at 10% rate of interest. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) was 2.23 and 2.54 for Chapainawabganj and Dinajpur district respectively. The NPV at 10% rate of interest was Tk. 9,48617 and 12,25067 for Chapainawabganj and Dinajpur district respectively. The IRR obtained was 20 percent for Chapainawabganj and 19 percent for Dinajpur district. The first ranked problem in Chapainawabganj district was lack of quality insecticides opined by 85% of the farmers followed by natural disaster. In Dinajpur district 80% farmer’s opined lack of quality insecticides and seedlings was their major problem in mango cultivation.
