Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BINA sub-station is situated at the northwestern outskirts of Comilla town lying approximately between 23^o28' north latitude & 91^o10' east longitude having an area of 2.94 ha. The area lies in the physiographic unit Northern and Eastern Piedmont Plain. Only one soil series Pritimpasa with one variant and two phases has been recognized in the area. Soil map was prepared having 3 mapping units. Land type was prepared having 2 mapping units. Land capability map was prepared having 2 mapping units. The soil samples collected were analysed in the laboratory to assess nutrient status of the soils and make recommendation for planned crops and cropping patterns.

Objectives:

6. To collect data on present land use, cultural practices and make recommendation for potential future land use

7. To evaluate the soil and land qualities relevant to crop production and irrigation.

Methodology:

BINA authority served a well diagrammatic map of the sub-station. Along with that RSS report of Comilla district and Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide of Comilla Sadar were used as base material. A field key for the expected soils on the basis of RSS was made to easily identify the soils in the field. The surveyors made a preliminary visit to the study area to collect overall relevant information regarding location, landform, cropping patterns etc. The soil survey was based on detailed field observations of soil, topography and other environmental characteristics and also collection of representative soil samples for laboratory analyses. Firstly the surveyors divided the study area into small plots by drawing grid lines over the map. Five traverse lines were drawn in two way direction. Each traverse line was 50m apart. Small pegs were set on each dissecting points and assigned a unique number for each point. Small pits were made with auger and spade. The soils were examined and described from the pits following FAO guidelines. Soil samples were collected from diagnostic horizons of master pits and composite topsoil samples were collected from each checking point for chemical analyses. Soil map, Land type and Land capability map were prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

The sub-station lies in the physiographic unit Northern and Eastern Piedmont Plain and is underlain by sub-recent weathered and unweathered wash out materials of adjoining Hills. The area is covered by a relatively smooth, broad and nearly level landscape. The soils are mostly strongly acidic to neutral in reaction. About 45% of the area is above normal flood level i.e. high land and 55% is medium high land. Only one soil series Pritimpasa with one variant and two phases. Pritimpasa man made variant occupy upper part of nearly level to very gently undulating ridges which is above normal flood level and imperfectly drained. Pritimpasa both moderately deep and deep phase, occur on lower part of ridge and are poorly drained. The remain shallowly flooded during monsoon. The soils are mapped into 3 mapping units. The area is mapped into 2 land type units and 2 land capability units. The soils are mainly strongly acidic to slightly acidic. Organic matter content was low to medium. N is low to very low. K, P and B is low. The soils are classified into Inceptisols and Entisols.
