Preparation of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Guide, Baliakandi Upazila.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Baliakandi upazila lies between 23^o34’ and 23^o44’ north latitude and 89^o26’ and 89^o41’ east longitude and covers an area of 23,921 ha. It lies in the physiographic unit of Ganges River Floodplain. The upazila comprises of 7 unions having a population of 1,86,562 (2001). Five land types namely highland, medium highland, medium lowland, lowland and very low land were identified. The textural classes were sandy loam, loam, clay loam and clay. Six soil groups were identified. Fourteen cropping pattern were found in this upazila. Total 122 soil samples were collected and analyzed. It was found that the soils are deficient in N, P, K, S, Zn, B and Fe . Baliakandi upazila was first surveyed in 1989 and updated in 2007.

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and land form map was prepared using 1:50000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soil samples were collected. The sampling frequency were 1 (one) sample per 200 ha. During survey, crops, cropping pattern, soil management data were collected by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops was made. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

Baliakandi upazila is situated in the south-west part of Rajbari district. It lies under the AEZ No. 12 (Low Ganges River Floodplain). In this upazila major land type recognized was lowland comprising 26.3% of total area followed by medium low land comprising 19.8% of the total area and medium high land 16.4%. Major textural class also identified was clay covering 44% of total area followed by clay loam (20%). Six soil groups were identified namely, Sara, Gopalpur, Ishurdi, Ghior, Ramdia, Ganges silty alluvium. Among fourteen cropping patterns rabi vegetables(wheat/mustard/lentil/khesari)-mixed broadcast aus & aman covers 3,754 ha; boro (HYV)-fallow-fallow covers 3,248 ha; fallow-broadcast aman covers 2,878 ha of total area. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops are given in the guide. This guide can be used for determining flood, drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
