The experiment was undertaken to determine the microbial activity of retting effluents collected from different jute growing districts of Bangladesh. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Fibre Quality Improvement Division taking seventeen retting effluent samples from five stations of BJRI during the period from April 2010 to December 2013. The shortest retting period 19 days was found using the retting effluent collected from Monirampur and Nashipur locations. The moderate retting period 21 days was recorded while using the effluent collected from Faridpur and the highest retting time 23 days was observed using retting effluents collected from Manikgonj. The sample collected from Faridpur produced cream colour of fibre which was the best in appearance. In the period of 2011-2012, retting effluents were collected from different jute growing districts and their retting activities were studied with jute variety CVL-1 and BJRI tossa pat-5. The retting effluents of some locations having good retting activities and micro organisms were found enriched with retting bacteria. The population of bacteria was found maximum at Faridpur sadar both in aerobic (98 x 105/ml) and anaerobic (99 x 105/ml) conditions. The second highest population was found at Monirampur (87 x 105/ml) in aerobic condition and the least amount of population (80 x 105/ml) in aerobic condition was found in central station of BJRI. In the period of 2010-2011, The bacteria isolated from Rangpur sadar and Rangpur station showed better and promising results than all other locations under this study. Bacteria isolated from the former were retted jute stem 12 days and bacteria isolated from Rangpur station retted jute stem within 11 days. Bacteria isolated from central station also showed good retting activities and retted jute stem in 12 days.

To determine the microbial activity of retting effluents of different jute growing districts of Bangladesh

During the period of 2011-2012 retting effluents were collected from different jute growing districts e.g. Jessore, Dinajpur, Faridpur, Manikganj and brought to the laboratory of Fibre Quality Improvement Division and then preserved immediately in the Refrigerator. The 250 gms of green jute stems were cut and retted with 600 ml tap water adding 150 ml of retting effluent in 1 litre conical flask. The flasks were capped with cotton plugs and covered with papers. The experiment was conducted under laboratory condition. During retting the microbes secreted enzymes on the bark of jute stem and hence the barks were loosened enough and fibres were separated. After retted the jute plants, it was observed that which effluent is more efficient as well as retted the plants at lower time. Then the selected effluent was analyzed critically for collecting retting organisms and preserved for further use.
