Study of Retting and Fibre Properties of Different Pipeline Varieties of Jute, Kenaf and Mesta in Different Agro-ecological Conditions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was undertaken to study the comparative retting and fibre properties of different pipeline varieties of jute, kenaf and mesta and conducted in different agro-ecological conditions in Rangpur, Faridpur and Manikgonj during the period of 2001-2002. Three pipeline varieties of C. capsularise viz. BJC-2142, BJC-298, BJC-370, two varieties of C. olitorius viz. O-72, OM-1 and one each of Kenaf (CPI-72126) and Mesta (SAMU-93) were considered for this study. Here, control varieties were CVL-1 for C. capsularis, O-9897 for C. olitorius, HC-95 for Kenaf and HS-24 for Mesta. Both BJC-2142 (1853 kg/ha) and BJC-370 (1914 kg/ha) were found higher yielder having less cuttings, shorter retting period, producing good quality fibre in comparison with other capsularis varieties except Faridpur station. On the other hand, O-72 and OM-1 were found higher yielder having shorter retting period and less cuttings in comparison with control variety except Faridpur station. The retting period range from 13-20 days for capsularis, 15-18 days for olitorius and 13-19 days for both kenaf & mesta.

Objectives:

To study the comparative retting and fibre properties of different pipeline varieties of jute, kenaf and mesta grown eventually different agro-ecological conditions.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at three stations of BJRI, such as Rangpur, Faridpur and Manikgonj during the period of 2001-2002. Three pipeline varieties of C. capsularise viz. BJC-2142, BJC-298, BJC-370, two varieties of C. olitorius viz. O-72, OM-1 and one each of Kenaf (CPI-72126) and Mesta (SAMU-93) were sown in the said three jute research stations. Here, control varieties were CVL-1 for C. capsularis, O-9897 for C. olitorius, HC-95 for Kenaf and HS-24 for Mesta. Plants of each variety were harvested at budding stage and retted in identical condition separately. Fibres were extracted, washed, dried and physical properties and quality of the fibres were assessed.

Achievement/Findings:
