A field experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during 2008 – 2009 to find out an integrated management package for controlling root knot nematode of Cucumber. Eight different treatments viz T1= Poultry refuse, T2 = Mustard oil cake (MOC), T3 = Furadan 5G, T4 = Trichoderma harzianum T5 = Furadan 5G + PR, T6 = Furadan 5G + MOC, T7 = Furadan 5G + T. harzianum and T8 = Control were used. Furadan 5G + PR and Furadan 5G + MOC were found more effective in controlling root knot disease. Among them Furadan 5G + PR appeared to be the best treatment. The materials also improved plant growth in terms of length and weight of shoot and root. The yield of cucumber was increased significantly due to application of the treatments. The highest yield was obtained from Furadan 5G + MOC but it was statistically identical with the yield of Furadan 5G + PR. The yield of cucumber ranged from 0.52 t/ha to 4.99 t/ha in 2008-09. It was observed that Mustard oil cake and Poultry refuse mixed with Furadan 5G gave satisfactory results to reduce root knot diseases as well as higher yield of cucumber.

To evaluate the effect of management practices of root knot nematode of Cucumber

The experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2008-09 in the field of Plant Pathology Division of BARI, Gazipur. Eight different treatments viz T1= Poultry refuse (10 ton/ha) , T2 = Mustard oil cake (800 kg/ha), T3= Furadan 5G (45 kg/ha), T4 = Trichoderma harzianum (14 g/pits) T5 = Furadan 5G + PR, T6 = Furadan 5G + MOC, T7 = Furadan 5G + T. harzianum and T8 = Control were used. Poultry refuse (10 t/ha), Mustard oil cake (800 kg/ha) were used 21, 15 days, respectively, before transplanting while Furadan 5G 45 kg/ha (20 gm/plant), and Trichoderma harzianum (15 g/pits) was added at the time of transplanting. The soil was fertilized with 375-150-250 kg NPK per hectare maintaining the unit plot size of 3 x 2.5 m. Healthy seedlings aged three weeks were transplanted in the pit at the rate of two seedlings per pit. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Two gram of chopped gall roots was added to each of the pit. Irrigation and intercultural operation were done as and where necessary. At the end of the growing period 50 % plants were uprooted from the field carefully to minimize the damage of roots. The root systems were washed under running tap water and data on shoot length and weight, roots length and weight were recorded. The number of galls per gram of roots and yield contributing characters were also recorded. The degree of root galling was indexed on the basis of 0-10 scale (Zeck 1971), where 0 (Zero) represented free from gall and 10 severely galled root system. The means for all the treatments were calculated and analyses of variance of all the characters studied were performed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

The largest shoot (750 cm) was obtain by Furadan 5G along with MOC. It was statistically identical with Furadan 5G + PR and Furadan 5G. The highest weight (1358 gm) was obtained from Furadan 5G+ MOC followed by Furadan 5G + PR and Poultry refuse. The lowest shoot height in control. The longest root (210 cm) was Furadan 5G + PR and lowest in control. The highest root weight (59.88 gm) was Furadan 5G + MOC lowest in control . The highest gall index value (7.65) was observed under the control treatment the lowest gall in Furadan 5G +MOC. All the treatments resulted significant reduction in gall number of cucumber roots as compared to control The highest number (91.14) of galls per gram root in control. The lowest gall numbers (30.21) per gram root in Furadan 5G + MOC. Different treatment showed significant variation in case of no of fruit setting per plot. The highest number of fruit per plot (39.65) was recorded from the Furadan 5G +MOC treatment which was statistically identical with Furadan 5G + PR. Influence of different treatments on yield was found as significant in the experiment. Furadan 5G + PR showed statistically identical with Furadan 5G + MOC. But the highest yield (8.61t/ha) was obtained from the treatment of Furadan 5G +MOC in both years . Maximum yield increased over control was found from the treatment of Furadan 5G + MOC which was very close to the result obtained from Furadan 5G + PR. From the study it may be concluded that maximum yield of Cucumber can be obtained by reducing root knot disease through Furadan 5G mixed with MOC or PR. Both of the treatments are more conducive than any other treatments applied in the experiment to reduce root knot disease of Cucumber.
