Reactions of Bt. Transgenic and Non Bt. Brinjal Lines to Plant Pathogenic and Non Plant Pathogenic Nematodes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nine Bt transgenic (Bt B 009, Bt ISD 006, Bt Islampuri, Bt Kazla, Bt Khotkhotia, Bt Nayantara, Bt Uttara, Bt Dohazari and Bt Chaga) and 9 non Bt brinjal (non Bt B 009, non Bt ISD 006, non Bt Islampuri, non Bt Kazla, non Bt Khotkhotia, non Bt Nayantara, non Bt Uttara, non Bt Dohazari and non Bt Chaga) lines were evaluated to assess its resistant or susceptibility to plant pathogenic and saprophytic nematodes at 7 locations namely, Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Burirhat, Rangpur, Ishurdi, Hathazari, Chittagong and Rahmatpur, Barisal in Bangladesh. From the present study it can be concluded that few Bt transgenic lines enhanced the development of both plant pathogenic and saprophytic nematode in the soil and other did not show any significant susceptibility or resistant against nematodes development in the soil.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of Bt and non Bt eggplant on root knot and other nematode in the three locations.

Methodology:

Seven experiments with Bt transgenic and non Bt transgenic brinjal lines were conducted at 7 locations namely, Joydebpur, RARS Jamalpur, RARS Ishurdi, RARS Jessore, RARS,Hathazari, RARS Rahmatpur and ARS Burirhat to evaluate its susceptibility to plant pathogenic and non pathogenic nematodes, during the Kharif season of 2009-10. The assessments were conducted at natural condition, i.e., without the addition of nematodes inocula to the experimental soils. The nematodes present in the soil were assessed by Baremann funnel technique, the plant parasitic and free living nematodes present per kg soil were counted. The nematode populations were counted at time of seedling transplanting and at the stage of plant harvest.

Achievement/Findings:

Joydebpur Plant parasitic and saprophytic nematode population was higher in Bt Nayantara and Bt Uttara compared to non Bt lines whereas in Bt B 009 line the increased of both plant parasitic and saprophytic nematodes population was lower than non Bt line. Jamalpur The plant pathogenic and non plant parasitic nematode populations were higher in Bt transgenic line compared to non Bt line. In Bt Islampuri line, 767.00% of plant parasitic nematode increased than initial population where it was 477.27% in non Bt Islampuri line. In Bt kazla line, the plant parasitic nematode population increased 627.78% than initial population where it was 545.45% in non Bt kazla. Jessore In Jessore, the increased of the plant pathogenic and non plant parasitic nematode populations were more or less similar trend both in Bt transgenic and non Bt eggplant lines at final harvesting stage than initial population. ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur In Burirhat, Rangpur, the increasing trend of both plant pathogenic and non plant parasitic nematode populations were similar in Bt transgenic and non Bt eggplant lines at final harvesting stage than initial population RARS, Ishurdi In RARS, Ishurdi, the increasing trend of plant pathogenic (441.67%) and non plant parasitic (553.13%) nematode populations than initial population was higher in Bt ISD 006 line compared to non Bt ISD006 (plant parasitic 355.00% and saprophytic 285.00%) whereas it was lower in Bt Uttara (plant parasitic 193.43% and saprophytic 180.77%) line compared to non Bt Uttara line (plant parasitic 225.00% and saprophytic 255.00%) RARS, Rahmatpur, Barisal In Barisal, at the harvesting stage of eggplant, the increased of plant parasitic and saprophytic nematode population was higher in Bt ISD066 line than non Bt line whereas in Bt and non Bt Nayantara line the increasing trend of both plant parasitic and saprophytic nematodes population was similar
