Study on the Presence of Nematodes in the Seedling Produced and Marketed by Commercial Seedling Nurseries

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey program was done to observe the root-knot nematode associated with vegetable seedling grown in commercial producer as well as farmers. Root-knot nematode infestation was found in the entire vegetables seedling in all the location. The number of nematode infested seedlings was increased with the increase of seedling age.

Objectives:

To know the status of nematodes associated with the seedlings.

Methodology:

Seedling of different vegetables was collected from different commercial seedling production farms, BADC farm, and farmer nursery bed. In each location, 20 seedlings of each vegetable was collected and brought to the laboratory of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur. The root zone area was observed under stereo-microscope and number nematode infected seedling were identified.

Achievement/Findings:

Seedling of tomato, eggplant, cabbage and cauliflower were collected from six district vz. Gazipur, Jessore, Rangpur, Commilla, Jamalpur and Sherpur. In all the area, the seedling of vegetables was found to be infected with root –knot nematode before transplanting in the main field. When young seedling (age less than 25 days) was examined, the range of root-knot nematode infected seedling was 0-20%, but in mature seedling (age more than 35 day) (seedling of Jamalpur and Sherpur districts) the range of root-knot nematode infected seedlings were 15-85%.
