Effect of Harvesting Stages and Curing Methods on the Yield of Onion

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Spices Research Centre, Magrua in the Rabi season of 2007-2008 to study the effects of harvesting stages and curing methods on the yield contributing characters and yield of onion with the variety BARI Piaz-1. Six levels of harvesting stage viz. 31-40%, 41-50%, 51-60%, 61-70%, 71-80% & 81-90% neckfall and four levels of curing method viz. curing bulbs with tops in partial shade, curing bulbs with tops in the field, curing bulbs without tops in partial shade, curing bulbs without tops in the field were used in the experiment. The maximum diameter of bulb (3.71 cm), weight of bulb (28.56 g) and yield per hectare (10.17 t) were obtained from the harvesting stage of 51-60% neckfall while statistically the lowest were obtained (2.98 cm, 19.62 g and 7.53 t/ha), respectively. Curing bulbs with tops in partial shade gave the greatest bulb (3.67 cm), the maximum weight of bulb (27.59 g) and the highest yield (10.89t/a). While statistically the lowest size of bulb (2.81 cm), bulb weight (18.71 g) and yield per hectare (7.4 t/h) were obtained from curing bulbs without tops in the field.

Objectives:

To establish the optimum harvesting stage and suitable curing method for higher yield of onion

Methodology:

A field trial was carried out at Regional Spices Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Magura during the period of Rabi season of 2007-2008 to observe the effects of harvesting stage and curing method on yield of onion cv. BARI Piaz-1. Six levels of harvesting stage viz. 31-40%, 41-50%, 51-60%, 61-70%, 71-80% & 81-90% neckfall and four levels of curing method viz. curing bulbs with tops in partial shade, curing bulbs with tops in the field, curing bulbs without tops in partial shade, curing bulbs without tops in the field were used in the experiment as treatments. The two-factor experiment having twenty four treatment combinations was laid out in randomized complete design with three replications. The size of unit plot was 3m x 2m with plant spacing of 15 x 10 cm. The field was fertilized with 10 t well-decomposed cowdung, 92 kg N, 126 kg P₂O₅, 90 kg K₂O and 20 kg S per hectare. Nitrogen, phosphate, potash and sulphar were supplied in the form of Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. The entire quantity of cowdung, P₂O₅, K₂O, S and half of N were applied as basal dose during land preparation. The rest N was applied in two equal installments 25 and 50 days after transplanting. Necessary cultural management practices such as weeding, irrigation and pest management were done as and when needed. Ten plants were randomly selected from each plot for data recoding. The leaves of onion are removed by cutting 8-10 cm above the bulb (Brewster, 1990b) as treatment required. Data were collected on bulb diameter and length, individual bulb weight, percentage of single bulb and weight of bulb per plot. Later yield per hectare was estimated from weight of bulbs per plot. The recorded data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Bulb diameter was increased with the increase in neckfall upto 60%. After that it was decreasing. Significantly the highest bulb size (3.71) cm was obtained at the harvesting of 51-60% neckfall which was statistically similar to the value of 31-40% (3.17 cm), 41-50% (3.36 cm), 61-70% (3.18 cm) and 71-80% (3.18 cm) neckfall. While the lowest bulb diameter (2.98 cm) was found from the bulb harvest at 81-90% neckfall. The maximum individual bulb weight (28.56 g) was recorded from the harvesting stage of 51-60% neckfall which was statistically dissimilar to the value of 31-40% (19.97 g) and 81-90% (19.62 g) neckfall. The interaction effect of harvesting stages and curing methods had no significant variation on yield contributing characters and the yield of onion, However, the highest yield was obtained from the treatment combination of 51-60% neckfall x curing bulbs with tops in partial shade.
