Study on Rubbering and Pre-mature Sprouting of Garlic

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The observation of rubbering and pre-mature sprouting of garlic was studied at Spices Research Centre, Bogra during Rabi season of 2007-08 to find out the reasons of that physiological disorder. Several causes were identified for that physiological disorder. Among these reasons water availability and higher doses of nitrogen were affected severely.

Objectives:

To increase per hectare yield and to decrease the pre-mature sprouting of garlic.

Methodology:

The study was observed under the experimental field of Spices Research Centre, Shibgonj, Bogra The reasons for these disorders are summarized as under for garlic experimental fields of Spices Research Centre, Shibgonj, Bogra during the period of January to April 2008. i) Rubbering and pre-mature sprouting of garlic bulbs are noticed mostly in fields which are located in low-lying areas of watershed where there is heavy deposition of nutrients along with silt during heavy rains. ii) These problems are severe in garlic fields which are more frequently irrigated than the normal requirement of garlic bulbs. iii) With the application of higher levels of nitrogen, there is an increased level of pre-mature sprouting of bulbs which results in splitting and rubbering of bulbs. iv)Rubbering incidence when higher level of nitrogen is applied in the form of urea. v) Due to increased levels of nitrogen, in addition to the increased production of rubberized bulbs, there is an increased level of thrips incidence in leaves during the later stage of crops. The thrips lacerate leaves and cause severe damage to the crop. Through lacerated wounds formed by thrips, there is a severe incidence of blast disease, caused by Botrytis allii, when crop is 70-90 days old, which further deteriorates the quality of garlic bulbs. vi) Short duration type of garlic is more susceptible than long duration type. vii) Pre-mature sprouting of bulbs is more when there is high moisture level in soil at maturity of crop due to heavy rains. viii) Delayed harvest during raining has increased pre-mature sprouting and splitting of bulbs. ix) Wider spacing of cloves at the time of planting increases uptake of nitrogen and water by the individual plants which increases pre-mature sprouting and rubbering of garlic bulbs.
