The highest shoot length (204.5 cm), was resulted from the treatment T9 (sterile soil), and the second highest shoot height was resulted from T4, where virgin soil was supplemented with Furadan and poultry refuse. The highest root length was also resulted from T9 and it was followed by T4. The fresh root wt was also resulted from sterile soil (T9), and it was followed by T2 and T4, and the lowest fresh root wt. was resulted from T5. The highest numbers of nematodes (12430)/ kg soil was obtained from the treatment T5, where only nematode infested soil was used. The highest gall index 9 was resulted from T5, where infested soil alone was used; it was followed by T6, sterile soil + inoculums.

To estimate the yield loss in water melon due to infection of Meloidogyne incognita.

The experiment was conducted at the pot house of Plant Pathology Division of BARI, during Rabi, 2005. Earthen pot of 25 cm dia. were cleaned and filled with 5 Kg loamy soils of 3 different types. i) Virgin soil ( soils which were piled and no crops were grown for 12 months) ii) Infested soil ( collected from nematode sick plot), and iii) Sterile soil (autoclaved soil) Treatments: The following treatments were used ; T1: Virgin soil, T2: Virgin soil + Furadan 5G @ 50 kg/ha, T3: Virgin soil + Poultry refuse (PR) @ 10 to/ha., T4: Virgin soil + Furadan 5G + Poultry refuse, T5: Infested soil, T6: Infested soil + Furadan 5G, T7: Infested soil + PR, T8 : Root-knot infested soil + Furadan 5G + PR, T9: Sterile soil, T10: Sterile soil + Inoculums of root-knot, T11: Sterile soil + Inoculums + Furadan 5G + Poultry refuse. Application of treatments: The required amount of Furadan and Poultry refuse were mixed with the pot soil before seedling plantation. Seedlings were prepared in the small polybags having sterile soils. Twenty days after germination the seedlings were transplanted in the main pots. There were five plants in each pot. After care : The seedlings were regularly watered and other intercultural operations were performed as when necessary Data collection: The following data on the plant and nematode growth characteristics were collected and recorded. After 65 days the plants were uprooted and washed in the running tap water. The following data were collected: i) Length of shoot (cm), ii) Fresh wt of the shoot, iii) Length of the root (cm), iv) Fresh wt of the root (gm), v) No. of nematodes / kg soil, vi) No of knot /gm root, and vii) Gall index (GI).

Results indicated that all the plant growth characteristics were highly influenced by the application of different treatments. The highest shoot length (204.5 cm), was resulted from the treatment T9 (sterile soil), and the second highest shoot height was resulted from T4, where virgin soil was supplemented with Furadan and poultry refuse. The lowest shoot length was resulted from T5, where only infested soil was used. The highest and T4, where virgin soil was supplemented with Furadan and Furadan + poultry refuse, respectively. The highest root length was also resulted from T9 and it was followed by T4. The fresh root wt was also resulted from sterile soil (T9), and it was followed by T2 and T4, and the lowest fresh root wt. was resulted from T5. Effect on nematode growth characteristics: The highest numbers of nematodes (12430)/ kg soil was obtained from the treatment T5, where only nematode infested soil was used. The second highest (9063/kg soil) was obtained from T6, where infested soil and Furadan was used. The lowest nematode population 120/kg soil was resulted from sterile soil (T9).the maximum no of galls/gm roots were obtained from T5 and T6, where only virgin soil and virgin soil was supplemented with Furadan were used. The lowest no of galls/g root were obtained from the treatments, T9, T2, T3 and T4. The highest gall index 9 was resulted from T5, where infested soil alone was used; it was followed by T6, sterile soil + inoculums. The lowest gall index 0.6 was resulted from T9, which was followed by T4, where virgin soil received Furadan 5G and poultry refuse.
