Management of Root-knot of Bottle Gourd with Chemical Nematicide and Organic Amendments

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The highest plant height (562 cm) was achieved from the treatment T_5, which received soil solarization with black polythene and supplemented with Furadan and poultry refuse.The highest fresh wt 1174 gm was achieved from T₅and was followed by T₂(PR + Furadan) and T₄ (only solarization), and the lowest was also from control. The highest gall index was resulted from T₇ and T₈and was followed by T₁(PR only). The highest suppresion of root-knot nematode was achieved in the plots treated with T₃, T₅, and & T₆ , i.e., plots treated with Furadan 5G, soil solarization + PR + Furadan and straw mulch + Furadan + PR, respectively. The maximum no fruit /plant and total weight was achieved in the plot treated wit T₅, here also lowest value was achieved in the control plot.

Objectives:

To manage and control the incidence of Meloidogyne incognita.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Kharif II in the expt. field of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The field was well plowed with good tilth and made even. Before final preparation root-knot inoculums as chopped galled roots of lady’s finger and country beans were added. Treatments: There were eight treatments; these were - Poultry refuse @ 10 ton/ha, Poultry refuse + Furadan 5G @ 45 kg/ha, Furadan 5G @ 45 kg/ha, Soil solarization with black polyethylene 4 weeks, Soil solarization + Furadan 5G + PR,Straw mulch + Furadan 5G + PR, Control ii) Nimbicidine + Pasteuria penetrans There were three replications and the design followed was RCBD. The plot size was 3 x 2 m and each plot has only one pit at the centre. Application of the treatments and after care: The plots received solarization was covered with black polyethelene for 4 weeks in such a way that the soil was totally covered. Fresh Poultry refuse was added in the plots and well mixed and kept for 3 weeks for decomposition. The seedlings were grown in small polybags in sterile soil. Twenty days after germination the seedlings were transplanted in the pits. In each pit 5 seedlings were transplanted. All the treatments like Furadan and P. penetrans and Neembicidine were applied before transplantation. Neembicidine was applied thrice once at the time of transplanting and 14 and 30 days after transplanting. Furadan was also splited twice, once at the time of transplanting and next at 40 days after transplanting. Recommended dozes of fertilizers were added before transplantation.

Achievement/Findings:

Results indicated that there were statistically significant effect of the treatments on the various plant and nematode growth characters, except root length. The highest plant height (562 cm) was achieved from the treatment T₅, which received soil solarization with black polythene and supplemented with Furadan and poultry refuse. The second highest plant height 517.5 cxm was resulted from the treatment having straw mulch and supplemented with Furadan and poultry refuse. The lowest (400.0 cm) was from control plot. The highest fresh wt 1174 gm was achieved from T₅ and was followed by T₂ (PR + Furadan) and T₄ (only solarization), and the lowest was also from control. Although statistically there was no differences in root length and weight, but the highest root length and weight was from T₅ and the lowest from control (T₇). The highest gall index was resulted from T₇ and T₈ and was followed by T₁ (PR only). The highest suppresion of root-knot nematode was achieved in the plots treated with T₃, T₅, and & T₆ , i.e., plots treated with Furadan 5G, soil solarization + PR + Furadan and straw mulch + Furadan + PR, respectively. The maximum no fruit /plant and total weight was achieved in the plot treated with T₅, here also lowest value was achieved in the control plot.
