Production,potential,problems and Policy of Major Spices: a Case Study in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to examine the spices production, potential and constrain as a crop food in Bangladesh taking secondary time series data from various published sources. The total cultivated area of major spices had been increased from 136.14 hectare in 1995-96 to 293.48 thousand hectare in 2004-05. At this period, production had been increased 308.86 to 993.81 thousand metric tons respectively. Spices productivity by different spices increased in 2004-05 from 1.50-1.70 times higher compared to the productivity of 1995-96. The increasing trend was found the entire major spices crop. There are vast potentials area/resources of major spices production in Bangladesh. However, spices production is faced with natural decay, pest and disease, lack of quality seed, storage facilities, non availability of production input, farmer adaptation of modern technology, higher production cost, harassment by bank staff for getting loan and low prices of produced prices. So, the possibility of increasing availability is limited. It is high time for the policy maker to take appropriate measures for more spices production. Both public and private sector in the field have to work out strategies for augmenting spices production and spices product.

Methodology:

Data was collected from different secondary sources like Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), Directorate of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and other published sources. Descriptive statistics were followed for analysis of data. Moreover, continuous compound growth rate was used to estimate the growth rate of major spices production for different time period. The model is such as A= P.ert Or P=A.ert Growth rate r =In (A/P)/t Where, P = Quantity of major spices production (000 mt) at beginning of period A = Quantity of major spices production (000 mt) at end of period r = Rate of return (rx100=growth rate in percent) t = Number of period including first and last year e = Constant = 2.71828

Achievement/Findings:

The importance of spices sector in terms of food, income, employment is the most significant and it plays a vital role in the sustainable economic development of Bangladesh. Therefore, the spices production from different source should be increased. On the other hand, necessary step should be taken so that the annual productivities and total production are increased. All possible land like homestead areas, cultivable fellow land, land after boro and wheat harvesting, roadside, hilly areas, char land etc. should be utilized properly. Spices grower should be provide credit in easy terms and condition so that they can purchase inputs in times. Moreover, the spices research centre of BARI should have to set up experiments for developing new technology for production and scientist should have to engage more effective research of spices sector. National and regional planning of spices sector should be furnished properly and their implementation should be ensure at the proper time. The positive attention and steps for production as well as expansion of spices by the Directorate of Agricultural Extension and Ministry of Agriculture is expected to taken at right time.
