Effect of Postharvest Treatments on Shelf Life and Quality of Tomato (lycopersicon Esculentum)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of chlorine, packaging and storage conditions on quality and shelf life of tomato. Tomato treated with 200 ppm chlorine, packed in perforated polyethylene bag and kept at ambient condition resulted in substantial reduction in losses caused by disease incidence and physiological weight loss. This treatment combination also considerably delayed the compositional changes in TSS, total sugar, reducing sugar, vitamin-C, ß-carotene etc. Under this condition shelf life of tomato had extended up to 39.33days as compared to treated or non-treated and kept in refrigerator without packaging for 9 days only.

Objectives:

To study the effect of chlorine, packaging and storage conditions on quality and shelf life of tomato.

Methodology:

Tomatoes cv. “Lalima” were harvested at light pink colour stage from Olericulture division, Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The experiment was conducted at the laboratory of Postharvest Technology Section, HRC, BARI, during March to April 2007. The fruits were sorted out to eliminate bruised, punctured and damaged ones. After sorting tomatoes were washed with 200 ppm NaOCl or with tap water (control). The treated fruits were then packed in gunny bag, 0.25% perforated polyethylene bag or left unpackaged condition. Thereafter, they were stored either in refrigerator at 4-5 °C or at ambient condition. The experiment was laid out in CRD factorial with three replications. Data on weight loss (%), diseases incidence (%), non marketability (%), shelf life (days), acidity (%), TSS (°Brix), reducing sugar (%), total sugar (%), vitamin-C (mg 100g-1) and ß-carotene (mg 100g-1) were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Results of the present study revealed that shelf life of breaker-turning tomato fruits cv. “Lalima” could be extended up to 39.33 days without excessive deterioration in quality by dipping them in 200 ppm NaOCl for 5 min, surface dried, packed in 0.5% perforated polyethylene bag and kept at ambient condition (20 ± 2 °C) as compared to control for 22.33 days.
