Effect of Pre-cooling and Silver Nitrate with Sucrose and Citric Acid on Vase Life of Gladiolus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to extend the vase life of gladiolus flower. Ice-cold water (2±1 °C) was sprayed over freshly harvested sticks of BARI Gladiolus-1. Then the spikes were transferred to the bottle containing vase solutions of 0, 40, 50 and 60 ppm silver nitrate with 1% sucrose and 20 ppm citric acid and kept at room temperature of 25-30 °C. Pre-cooled spikes held in vase solution contained 1% sucrose + 50 ppm AgNO₃ + 20 ppm citric acid significantly reduced the floret deterioration, water loss uptake ratio and increased floret opening and vase life substantially. Under this condition vase life of BARI Gladiolus-1 could be extended up to 11.82 days as compared to control for 7.4 days only.

Objectives:

To study the effect of pre-cooling and levels of silver nitrate with sucrose and acidifier on the postharvest life of gladiolus.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at the laboratory of Postharvest Technology Section, HRC, BARI during February to March 2007. Spikes BARI Gladiolus-1 at 65 to 80 cm lengths were collected from the experimental field of Floriculture Division, HRC, BARI. Gladiolus sticks were pre-cooled with spraying of ice-cold water (2±1 °C) for 45 minutes at 3 minutes interval with the help of hand sprayer. After that the spikes were kept in vase solutions containing 0, 40, 50 and 60 ppm silver nitrate with 1% sucrose and 20 ppm citric acid. Tap water was used in the experiment. Two spikes were used for each replication. The experiment was laid out in CRD factorial with three replications. Data on floret opening, floret deterioration, weight loss, water uptake, vase life etc were collected and statistically analyzed.
