Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken in Tangail and Pabna during 2005-06 to evaluate the technologies given the FSR sites of OFRD. In Tangail, different technologies were given to the farmers during 1984 and in Pabna during 1989. It was found that many farmers still continuing the technologies like homestead vegetables and fruits cultivation, improved crop management, de-warming, beef fattening, artificial insemination, poultry vaccination, improved fish culture (mono culture), use of improved chula, use of composting and bee keeping. These practices helped increase income of the farmers and generate employment opportunities greatly. Farmers faced problems with some BARI technologies which should be studied in depth.

Objectives:

i. To identify the impacts of BARI Technologies in terms of yield increase, higher returns, income and employment generation.

ii. To assess the level of adoption of BARI technologies at farm level and

iii. To explore the constraints of the technologies.

Methodology:

Two FSR sites namely Tangail and Pabna wee considered for the present study. The necessary information was collected with the help of pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedules. A total of 53 farmers taking 31 from Tangail and 22 from Pabna were selected for interviews. The collected data were summarized and analyzed through tabular methods using averages, percentages, ratios etc. Computer facilities were used for data entry and analysis. The present study was conducted during April to June, 2006.

Achievement/Findings:

Crops cultivation in the homestead areas contributed 11 percent of the total annual earnings. It was found that many farmers still continuing the technologies like homestead vegetables and fruits cultivation, improved crop management, de-warming, beef fattening, artificial insemination, poultry vaccination, improved fish culture (mono culture), use of improved chula, use of composting and bee keeping. These practices helped increase income of the farmers and generate employment opportunities greatly. Most of the BARI technologies are adopted by the farmers in the study areas. The adoption level of the technologies varies from 40% to 100% among the farmers. Improved Chula saved farmers cost from 105% (Pabna) to 185% (Tangail) per week. Non availability of good seeds, high price of inputs were the major problems faced by the farmers in the study areas.
