Incidence of Mango Scab Disease and Its Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trial was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj during February to June, 2013 to find out the reaction of eleven popular mango varieties against the disease and to find out the suitable fungicide to control the disease. The mango varieties were are BARI Aam-1, BARI Aam-2, BARI Aam-3, BARI Aam-4, Khirsapat, Langra, Fazli, Gopalbhog, Ashina, Gooti and Mollica. At marble stage of the fruits the incidences and severities were varied from 9.33 % to 31.00 % and 2.41 % to 6.17 % respectively. Among the varieties the highest incidence (31.00 %) and severity (6.17 %) was recorded in Khirsapat. After harvesting it was observed that among the varieties the highest incidence (61.67 %) and severity (17.17%) was recorded in Khirsapat. Among the fungicides used in the investigation the highest disease incidence (54.33 %) was recorded from Praud 25 EC and the lowest incidence (22.33 %) was recorded from sprayed with Iprozim 26 WP. On the other hand, the lowest disease severity (6.33 %) as well as the highest disease reduction (84.92 %) was recorded from friuts treated with Iprozim 26 WP as compared with the unsprayed control plants.

Objectives:

To find out the reaction of different mango varieties against scab disease and also the suitable fungicide to manage the disease.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the Regional Horticulture Research Station, Chapai Nawabganj from February to June, 2013. Data on disease incidence and severity were taken in two times for variety reaction first when the fruits become marble stage and second just after harvest. Spray was commenced on BARI Aam- 3 of 20 years old established in a mango orchard. Spraying starts just after fruit set. In order to prevent flower damage by insect pests Ripcord @ 1 ml/litre was sprayed before 15 days of flowering and was mixed with all the fungicides at first spray. The spray was continued before 20 days of harvesting of the fruit at 15 days interval. Details of the fungicides including their doses are shown in table 1. At every spray schedule, control plants were sprayed with water. Spray was stopped at 20 days before harvest of fruits. Randomly selected 100 fruits were observed from each treatment. The development of scab was recorded following a standard severity scale (0-5) developed by Mortuza et al. (2000). Percent disease index (PDI) was measured from percent fruit area covered by the disease. To evaluate the effectiveness of the fungicides, the severity of diseases was measured by calculating the percent disease index (PDI) according to the formula of Singh (1984)

Achievement/Findings:

The mango varieties under investigation showed differential response to scab of mango fruits. At marble stage of the fruits the incidences and severities were varied from 9.33 % to 31 % and 2.41 % to 6.17 % respectively. However, the highest incidence (31.00 %) was recorded in Khirsapat followed by Ashina (25.33 %),Gooti (24.00 %), and Gopalbhog (18.33 %). The lowest incidence (9.33 %) was recorded in BARI Aam-2 and Fazli, while the incidence was intermediate in rest of the mango varieties. In case of severity the highest severity (6.17%) was recorded from khirsapat followed by Gooti (4.79%), Ashina (3.75%) and the lowest severity (2.41%) was recorded from Mollica. After harvesting it was observed that among the varieties the highest incidence (61.67 %) and severity (17.17 %) was recorded in Khirsapat followed by BARI Aam-3 (47.67 % & 12.42%) and Gooti (45.67 % &11.41 %). On the other hand the lowest incidence (16.00 %) was recorded from Fazli but the lowest severity (5.40%) was recorded from and Gopalbhog variety.
