Socio-economic Study on Integrated and Non-integrated Pest Management on Vegetable Production in Two Districts of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out to investigate the socio-economic characteristics of IPM and Non-IPM farmers in two intensively eggplant and sweet gourd growing districts of Jessore and Comilla. It also observed the detrimental effect of insecticides used for vegetable production. The IPM technologies on yields, gross returns and gross margins were found to be positive. The IPM farmers produced higher benefits compared to the Non-IPM farmers. The benefit cost ratio of IPM farmers was found higher compared to Non-IPM farmers for both eggplant and sweet gourd production. The use of insecticide affects the human health and creates environmental pollution. By considering the relative advantages of IPM technologies for controlling disease and pest, farmers showed keen interest for the adoption of these technologies in near future. The study also suggested some necessary recommendation for sustaining the IPM technologies for greater expansion and dissemination at farm level through field demonstration, training, awareness creation about market demand and higher price for pesticide free vegetables.

Methodology:

Data were collected from Jessore and Comilla districts during 2008-09. Two vegetables eggplant and sweet gourd were considered in the study. A total of 120 farmers growing vegetables were selected randomly taking 60 from each district where 30 of IPM and 30 of Non-IPM farmers from each area. Pre-designed interview schedule was used for the data collection. The collected data were coded and edited for processing through tabular method using average, percentage, ratio etc.

Average cost of total variable cost of eggplant cultivation for IPM farmers was found to be Tk. 118547 and for Non-IPM farmers it was Tk 130345 per hectare. The average total variable cost of sweet gourd cultivation for IPM farmers was Tk. 73628 and for Non-IPM farmers it was Tk 75450 per hectare. The average yield of IPM farmers was found higher than the non IPM farmers. Similarly, the gross return and gross margin for IPM farmers was higher over the non IPM farmers. The BCR for eggplant varied from 2.49 to 3.04 under IPM and from 2.05 and to 2. 43 under Non-IPM. The per hectare gross margin of sweet gourd varied from Tk. 115632 to Tk. 133452 under IPM and Tk. 102702 to Tk. 112639 under Non-IPM. The BCR of sweet gourd varied from 2.55 to 2.84 under IPM and 2.32 to 2.54 under Non-IPM. Most of the farmers (62%) did not use any safety measures at all. Only 17% covered their body to reduce exposure to the toxic chemicals and only 8% and 7% covered head and covered their faces with cloth to minimize breathing the insecticides. Only 3% used gloves or shocks to cover their hands and legs. Only 3% farmers used glasses or other form of protective devices to protect their eyes during insecticide application. Non-availability of sex pheromone was the major problem as stated by the farmers (90%). About 80% farmers reported that the unavailability of HYV seedlings followed by knowledge gap about proper application of IPM technologies. Non-IPM farmers also stated that non availability of HYV seedlings, high price of fertilizers/seedlings, no training received about IPM technologies and less effectiveness of insecticides as the major problems for them.
