Profitability and Technical Efficiency of BARI Improved Mungbean Cultivation in Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Jessore, Jhenaidah and Chuadanga disrtricts 2001-2002 to see the efficiency of mungbean production under farmers’ practices. It was found that improved varieties of mungbean grown in kharif-I was highly profitable the sesame. The technical efficiency of mungbean at the existing level of resource use was found 90%. This indicated 10% high potential for increasing mungbean yield at present level of resource use. The issues related to the performance of this variety exhibit that economic returns from mungbean were found higher than sesame, it prevents environmental degradation through increasing soil health and it provides food and nutrition security to farm families and increase employment opportunities to rural people to some extent.

Objectives:

i. To determine the relative profitability of improved variety of mungbean with its competitive crops

ii. To examine the technical efficiency of improved variety of mungbean at farm level

iii. To assess the issues related to the sustainability of mungbean in the farmers fields.

Methodology:

Three districts namely Jessor, Jhinaidh and Chuadanga were selected for the study. Two thana from each district and one village from each thana were selected. Extensive cultivation of mungbean was the main criteria for the selection of study area. A complete list of mungbean growers was made and 15 farmers were taken as sample farmers from the list. Thus, 15 sample farmers from each thana and 30 farmers from each district were taken randomly. In this way, a total of 90 sample farmers were selected as respondents for this study. Data were collected in Kharif-I during 2001-2002. The competitive crop of mungbean was identified in the area through Rapid Rural Appraisal technique which was sesame. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the profitability of the crops. On the other hand, tabular, statistical as well as econometric methods were used for the technical efficiency analysis. Stochastic production frontier function was used to determine the technical efficiency of mungbean growing farms.

Achievement/Findings:

Sesame was only the competitive crops in the existing cropping pattern, which was found as mungbean/ sesame-T.Aus-Potato/Lentil/Mustard. In case of Jhenaidah and Chuadanga mungbean was found very popular among the farmers. The study revealed that per hectare gross margin for mungbean cultivation was found three times higher than sesame and the BCR was also found 32% higher. This reflected that the mungbean cultivation was relatively advantageous than sesame. Technical efficiency for mungbean was found on an average 90%. This indicated that there exist 10% potential for increasing mungbean yield at the existing level of their resource use. The study exhibits that mungbean provides more economic benefits than sesame, keeps the soil fertile for long run preventing soil digression, food and nutrition security and income opportunities. Thus, it may be concluded that mungbean might be a profitable crop and can sustain for long run at the farmers’ levels.
