Resource Use Efficiency of Country Bean Production with Competitive Crops in Jessore Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was undertaken in Jessore during 2001-2002 to know the profitability of country bean production with competitive crops. The competitive crops such as, brinjal, pointed gourd, cabbage and cauliflower were considered for the study. It was found that country bean production with other competitive crops was found profitable to the farmers. The benefit cost ratio of country bean was found 2.05 on full cost basis whereas for competitive crops, it was 2.52, 2.67, 2.42 and 2.80 for brinjal, pointed gourd, cabbage and cauliflower respectively. The magnitudes of the co-efficient of country ban implied that human labour, tractor, urea, TSP and MP had considerable effects on gross return, the ratio of MVPxi and MFCxi of human labour, tractor, urea, TSP and MP were positive and more than one which implied that more profit could be obtained by increasing investment in these inputs. The BCR of countrybean was found little lower than the competitive crops. Since country bean is better produced as well as largely produced in the region, better management with the availability of inputs are urgently needed in the area for the crop.

Objectives:

i. To estimate the economic profitability of country bean with other competitive crops

ii. To estimate the resource use efficiency of country bean cultivation

iii. To identify the constraints of country bean cultivation.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two Upazilas namely jessore sadar and Bagharpara under Jessore district. Two villages from Barinagar union of Jessore sadar Upazila and two from Mothurapur union of Bagharpara Upazila were selected for data collection for brinjal and pointedgourd as competitive crops of country bean and cabbage and cauliflower from Bagharpara Upazila for this study. A totla of 80 farmers taking 40 from each area for country bean and 120 farmers taking 30 for each competitive crop were selected for the study. The data were collected through survey method by a pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedules by the researcher and field investigators during the year of 2001-2002. The collection of data from Barinagar union of Jessore sadar Upazilla at kharif-2 was for country bean and data collection from Mothurapara union of Bagharpara Upazilla at rabi season for the same crop. The collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives. Tabular and statistical methods of analysis were followed in the study. The Cob-Douglas production model was chosen because of the best fit of the sample data.

The major constraints in producing country bean was insect pest and diseases reported by all farmer’s. Low market price of products at harvest periods was mentioned as the second important problem to the farmers followed by high price of insecticides and chemical fertilizers and lack of training facilities.
