Fabrication of Low Cost Fabric Abrasion Testing Machine and Comparison of Experimental Results.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During 1993 the Marten dale abrasion tester of BJRI are used to analyze abrasion resistance of fabrics, but the machine is expensive. If a low cost machine is modified using that expensive machine, the research facilities will be increased and country will be able to save its hard earned foreign currency. For this reason, abrasion resistances of different types of jute fabrics were measured by new and old abrasion tester during 1993 to 94 in Textile Physics Division of BJRI. The out of the modified machine is deviated around 8.42% to 3.52% while for tests on the Martindale abrasion tester, the range was from 18.7% to 1.26%. So, it can be said that the low cost abrasion resistance testing machine can be used for routine abrasion tests in the laboratory.

Objectives:

The objective of the work are:-

1.To find out a correlation between the fabricated abrasion testing machine and the standard Martin dale abrasion tester.

2.To be investigated whether the obtained results are reproducible or not

3.To fabricate a low cost fabric abrasion testing machine.

4.To compare its experimental results with standard Martin dale abrasion tester.

Methodology:

Different types of fabrics were collected from BJRI. By testing these fabrics in the fabricated machine the number of revolution were recorded at the point of rupture. Some fabrics were used in the Martindale Abrasion Tester and the numbers of rubs were counted. Five specimens from each sample of four different types of fabrics were tested on both the low cost Fabrics Abrasion Testing Machine and the Martindale Abrasion Tester. The results were analyzed and a correlation between the results of two machines was made.

Achievement/Findings:

The range of co-efficient of variation of results of tests on the fabricated machine was from 8.42 to 3.52% while for tests on the Martindale abrasion tester, the range was from 18.7 to 1.26%. This suggests that the results of tests on the fabricated machine are in general closer to those obtained from comparable tests on the Martindale abrasion tester. Therefore, the low cost fabrics abrasion testing machine can be used for routine abrasion tests in the laboratory.
