Evaluation of Exotic Potato Varieties for Resistance to Plrv and Pvy Under Infection Pressure (3rd Generation) in 2010-11

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifteen exotic potato varieties were evaluated under infection pressure of PLRV and PVY to find out resistant source (s) at Joydebpur, Gazipur. In growing up test during 2009-10 and 2010-11, it was shown that both PLRV and PVY infection was varied significantly by the varieties. In 2010-11, the highest germination (99.07%) was observed in EG-norm and it was lowest in variety Saline and Taurus (84.26%). In 2010-11, highest infection of PLRV was recorded on variety Labella (46.67%) and it was lowest in variety Saline (9.93%). The highest infection of PVY was recorded in the variety FOCVS (13.84%) followed by Taurus (13.69%) whereas, it was lowest in variety Agilla (0.52%), followed by EG-norm (0.98%).

Objectives:

To evaluate some exotic varieties for resistance to PLRV and PVY under field pressure conditions.

Methodology:

Thirty one exotic varieties including popular variety Diamant were exposed to the infection pressure of PLRV and PVY at Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2010-11 cropping season. Two separate experiments a) one for PLRV and b) another one for PVY were conducted with 3 replications. In the first season (2008-09) along with each test variety/line, one row of the respective virus infected tubers was planted as infection source. In the 2nd and 3rd season (2009-10 and 2010-11), cold stored tuber samples were planted in the field at Joydebpur following the same design except infected rows. Recommended doses of fertilizers (N: P₂O₅: K₂O: S @ 160:100:160:20 Kg/h) were applied and other agronomic practices were done accordingly. The crop was planted on 21-11-10 and harvested on 27-02-11. Percent PLRV and PVY infection data were taken at 35 and 45 DAP visually and other data were also taken accordingly.
