Performance of Newly Introduced Potato Varieties Against Post Harvest Disease Under Natural and Cold Storage Conditions in 2010-11

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Performance of different potato varieties was assessed to post harvest rottage at Joydebpur under natural and cold storage conditions. The percentage of tuber rot due to disease was increased with the increase of time under both conditions. Under natural condition, the highest rottage value was observed in the variety Orchesta by 92.56% hybrid clone 1.04/5R (87.27%), Red Scarlett (73.76 %) and Romanze (66.03%). after 180 days of storage. On the other hand, variety Naturo showed the lowest tuber rottage (13.11%) followed by variety Suraya (23.68%). In case of cold storage condition, the tubers rot losses was nil in variety Amanda and it was lowest in Everest (0.41%) followed by Liseta (0.52%), Charlotte (0.68%) up to 30 days after taken out from cold storage. The highest values of tuber rottage were observed in variety Zorba (67.12%) followed by Musica (39.46%) up to 30 days after taken out from the cold storage.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of different potato varieties against post harvest disease under natural and cold storage conditions at Joydebpur.

Methodology:

A study was conducted on the performance of newly introduced potato varieties to post harvest disease under natural and cold storage conditions. In natural condition, twenty nine potato varieties/ clones were preserved in the processing shed in netted wooden rake under ambient temperature at TCRC, Joydebpur. Each Variety contained 15 tubers with different sizes. Data were recorded based on tuber rottage due to diseases (soft rot, dry rot) and high temperature, weight loss and sprouting were taken with 30 days interval and continued up to 180 DAS (days after storage). Over all performance of different varieties were graded at 180 days after storage following 1-9 scale, where 1 means very worse and 9 means best performance. Another set of experiment was conducted to observe the rottage loss under cold store condition. Thirty varieties /clones were included in this trial. Tubers were kept in the BADC cold store at Kashempur, Gazipur. Data on tuber rottage by weight were taken at after 1st of taken out from cold storage and some observation were taken frequently up to 30 days after taken out from the cold storage.
