Ginger and Turmeric Production Under Traily System of Pointed Gourd Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the RARS, Jessore during 2007-08 to observe the production and economics of ginger and turmeric cultivation under the traily of pointed gourd. The experiment consisted of seven treatments.The treatment combinations were as follows: T₁ = Pointed gourd + 100% turmeric T₂ = Pointed gourd + 50% turmeric (4 outer rows) T₃= Pointed gourd + 100% ginger T₄ = Pointed gourd + 50% ginger (4 outer rows) T₅ = Pointed gourd sole T₆= Turmeric sole T₇ = Ginger sole.The edible fruit yield of pointed gourd did not varied significantly due to cultivation of ginger and turmeric under the traily of pointed gourd. Among the two spices crops viz. ginger and turmeric, turmeric cultivation under the traily of pointed gourd was more economic. The maximum pointed gourd equivalent yield (40.55 t/ha), gross return (567700 Tk/ha), net return (341693 Tk/ha), benefit cost ratio (2.51) and LER (1.92) were obtained from turmeric production under the traily of pointed gourd.

Objectives:

To fit ginger or turmeric in the inter-cropping system with pointed gourd.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore to fit ginger and turmeric as the suitable inter-crop with pointed gourd during 2007-08. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications having the unit plot size 4.0 m x 4.8 m. The treatment combinations were as follows: T₁ = Pointed gourd + 100% turmeric T₂= Pointed gourd + 50% turmeric (4 outer rows) T₃ = Pointed gourd + 100% ginger T₄ = Pointed gourd + 50% ginger (4 outer rows) T₅ = Pointed gourd sole T₆ = Turmeric sole T₇ = Ginger sole The pointed gourd vines were planted at a spacing of 1.5 m x 1.5 m on December 15, 2007. For, pointed gourd in each pit 1.0 kg cow dung, 250 g mustard oil cake, 100 g urea, 170 g TSP, 130 g MP and 150 g gypsum at time of vine planting. During May-June 2008, 500 g cow dung, 70 g urea, 90 g TSP and 100 g MP were also applied in each round the pit of pointed gourd. Ginger and turmeric were planted under the traily of pointed on 16 April 2008. For ginger and turmeric fertilizers were applied @ cow dung 4 ton, 200 kg urea, 180 kg TSP, 160 kg MP, 110 kg Gypsum and 3 kg Zno/ha, respectively were applied. Half of urea, entire amount of cow dung, TSP, MP, gypsum and Zno at the time of final land preparation. Rest of urea was applied at 80 and 110 days after planting of corm. Weeding and other intercultural operations for pointed gourd, ginger and turmeric were done as an when necessary. Data on different yield components and yield were recorded and analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum pointed gourd equivalent yield (40.55 t/ha), gross return (Tk 567700/ha), net return (Tk 341693/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.51) and LER (1.92) were obtained from 100% turmeric under the traily of pointed gourd.
