Efficacy of Fungicides in Controlling Late Blight of Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to find out the effective fungicide (s) in controlling late blight of potato at three locations viz., Jamalpur, Bogra and Debiganj. In Jamalpur, all the tested fungicides reduced the disease significantly over control. Manconil and Gold Hope showed the best performance of 90.0% disease reduction over control followed by Etacol, Temper, Sprinter, Mozrat, Top and Deconil with the same reduction value by 85.0%. In Bogr, all the tested fungicides also reduced the disease significantly over control. Among the tested fungicides Jazz 80WP and Dithane M-45 showed the best performance in case of disease reduction (2.7). Whereas the maximum tuber yield (37.33 t/ha) was obtained from the fungicide Euromeal 72WP followed by Afizeb (36.07 t/ha). In Debiganj, late blight infection was very low in this year in comparison to the previous years. However in the later stage highest % leaf area infection of 35.00 was found in the unsprayed control plot. But in the fungicides sprayed plot the % leaf area infection were less than 5.00 which indicate that all the fungicides were effective against the disease.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of some new fungicides in controlling the disease under field condition.

Methodology:

The field experiment was laid out to find out the effective fungicide (s) in controlling late blight of potato at three locations viz., Jamalpur, Bogra and Debiganj during the rabi 2009-2010. Diamant variety was used as planting material. The study was followed by RCBD with three replications. The tubers were planted following the spacing 60cm ×25cm. Unit plot size was 3m×3m. Manures and fertilizers were applied as per recommendation (N: P₂O₅: K₂O: S @ 160:100:160:20 kg/ha). Weeding, earthing up, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. A total of twenty one fungicides were tested in Jamalpur, eleven fungicides were in Bogra and 17 fungicides were tested in Debiganj to control late blight of potato. Four sprays were done at 10 days interval. Data on disease severity (1-9 scale) were taken during each spray and converted in to percent disease index (PDI). Percent leaf area infection at 80 days after planting were estimated by visual observation and were used for analysis. Crops were harvested at 90 days after planting (DAP) and yield data were taken from the whole plot.

Achievement/Findings:

In Jamalpur, Manconil showed the best result in case of disease control followed by Gold hope. Manconil also showed the highest yield increase over control (61.6%) followed by Gold hope (61%) whereas, Hexazole showed (0.8%) yield increase over control. In Bogra, Jazz 80WP and Dithane M-45 showed the lowest percentage infection (2.7) followed by Smartzeb 80WP (3.2). The highest tuber yield (37.33 t/ha) was found in Euromeal 72WP fungicide followed by Afizeb (36.07 t/ha). In Debiganj, all the fungicides were found effective to control the disease.
