Determination of the Fiber Fineness of Different Grades of Fiber by Air Flow Method and Gravimetric Methods.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The average diameter of different grades of fiber were measured by Air Flow method and Gravimetric method.The diameter of tossa fiber is higher than the white fiber in both air flow method and gravimetric method except BTE.In the investigation the reeds were combed to facilitate the picking of fibers. This combing operation opened the meshy structure of the reeds in such a way that split up the coarsed fibers more that it did the fine fibers.

Objectives:

A comparative study among test methods as are used for determination of fiber fineness.

Methodology:

The samples were collected from only those bales which were opened in BJRI experimental mill. Each bale contains 80 heads of jute called morahs. Each morah weights about 5 lbs. The bale was divided into 30-35 parts by taking groups of 2-3 morahs at a time. The morahs which remain in the bales in twisted and doubled up condition were now untwisted and opened up and each group of morahs were spread out on the floor separately side by side with other groups. Bundles of reeds were taken from these groups and mixed together to make a sample of about 45 lbs which was then divided into three approximately equal parts of about 15 lbs each. One of the parts was kept apart for spinning trial and the remaining two parts were mixed together. From the mixture 15 lbs were taken for the study. In the methods finesness was obtained in terms of fiber diameter expressed in micron. The apparatus used was developed by BJTRA. In this apparatus air was sucked in through a cylindrical bundle of fibers 3 inch long and having 3.3 cm diameter.

Achievement/Findings:

The diameter of tossa fiber is higher than the white fiber in both air flow method and gravimetric method except BTE. In case of BTB, BTC and BTE both in airflow and gravimetric method method showed an insignificant result which was not expected. Normally the value of upper grade would show less value than the lower grade. Perhaps it happened because the jute fibers wew not single filaments. They are complex entiries comprising several interlinked filaments. The observed diameter of the fibers therefore depends mainly upon the number of filaments stacking together interlinked in a meshy structure. Greater the number of filaments coarser is the fiber. In the investigation the reeds were combed to facilitate the picking of fibers. This combing operation opened the meshy structure of the reeds in such a way that split up the coarsed fibers more that it did the fine fibers.
