Cultural Management of Yellow Disease in Indigenous Potatoes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eleven indigenous potato varieties and a check variety Diamant was used for the cultural management of Yellows disease at Joydebpur. It is shown that both percent PLRV and Yellows infection was influenced by the varieties and size of the tubers used as seed. In most cases small size tubers showed higher infection of PLRV and yellows than large size tubers. Highest PLRV infection was recorded in Lalpakri by 30.51% and 25.93% when used as small and big size tuber, respectively, followed by Aausha and Lalshil. Five varieties showed no infection of PLRV through visual observation irrespective of tuber size. In case of Yellows disease, highest infection was observed in V-33 (63.96%) when used small size tuber and the value was 49.58% using big size tuber followed by Challisha. Diamant showed no yellows disease. Highest germination was observed in large sized tuber, whereas it reduced when small size tuber used.

Objectives:

To select resistant variety (s) for recommendation to cultivate in farmers' field

Methodology:

Eleven indigenous potato varieties and a check variety Diamant were exposed in the field at Joydebpur, Gazipur. Seed tubers of all varieties were divided into two categories, i.e. large size and small size. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. Tubers were planted in the field at Joydebpur on 03.12.09. Recommended doses of fertilizers (N: P₂O₅: K₂O: S @ 160:100:160:20 Kg/h) were applied and other agronomic practices were done accordingly. The crop was harvested on 02.03.10. Data on percent germination, virus (PLRV) and Yellows (mycoplasma) infection were taken accordingly and analyzed statistically using.

Achievement/Findings:

Hagrai, Jhaubilati, Indurkani and Shilbilati were completely free from PLRV infection. Tuber size also varied on the recorded parameter. The large sized tuber gave the highest germination (94.65%) with the lowest value of PLRV and yellows infections by 8.20% and 21.92%, respectively, whereas, the germination and the highest infection of PLRV and Yellows were obtained in small size tuber. Incase of interaction effects of variety and tuber size, Hagrai, Jhaubilati, Indurkani, Shindur Kouta and Shilbilati found free from infection regardless the tuber size. However, the highest PLRV infection was recorded in Lalpakri by 30.51% and 25.93% when used as small and big size tuber, respectively, followed by Aausha and Lalshil. Based on Yellows disease, highest infection was observed in V-33 (65.04%) when used small size tuber and the value was 49.58% using big size tuber followed by Challisha. The check variety Diamant showed no yellows disease.
