Preparation of Upazila Land and Soil Resource Guide, Ishwardi

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ishwardi upazila is situated in the south-western part of Pabna district and covers an area of 269.47 sq. km. The upazila comprises of 9 unions and 1 pourosobha having a population of 2,36,825 (1991). It lies in the physiographic unit High Ganges Floodplain and Active Ganges Flood Plain. Five land types namely highland, medium highland, medium low land, low land and very low land were identified. The textural classes of soil found were sandy, sandy loam, loam, clay loam and clay. Seven soil groups were identified. Thirteen major cropping patterns were found in the upazila. Total 123 soil samples were collected and analyzed and found soils of the upazila are deficient in N, P, S, Zn and B. Pirgacha upazila was first surveyed in 1985 and updated in 2001.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and land form map was prepared using 1:50000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite top soils were collected. The sampling frequency was 1 (one) sample per 200 ha. During survey, crops, cropping pattern, soil management data were collected by interviewing the farmers. Soil samples were analyzed for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type was determined. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops was made. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared.

Achievement/Findings:

Ishwardi lies under the AEZ no. 10(Active Ganges Floodplain) and AEZ no. 11 (High Ganges Flood Plain). In this upazila major land type recognized was highland comprising 39.4% of total area followed by medium highland comprising 23.3% of the total area. Major textural class also identified was loam covering 38.2% of total area followed by clay loam (24.1%). Seven soil groups were identified namely Sara, Gopalpur, Ishwardi, Ghior, Batra, Ganges Sandy Alluvium and Ganges Silty Alluvium, of which Sara covers major area (30.7%). For different land type and soil group, the crop suitability was determined for both irrigated and non-irrigated condition and a list of suitable crops for this area is attached in the guide. Thirteen major cropping patterns were found in the area of which robi crops-broadcasted aus/ jute/sesame-fallow covered major area (27.1%) followed by robi crops- broadcasted aus/ jute/ sesame - TA (21.2%). Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops is given in the guide. The guide can be used for determining flood and drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion affected area. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
