Artificial Screening of Exotic Potato Varieties Against Late Blight Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Out of 20 varieties tested, none was shown resistant to late blight disease. Three varieties showed moderately susceptible (Smart, Opera and Crips 4 all), 4 showed susceptible (Ajiba, Alegria, Saline and Bellini) and the rest 13 varieties showed highly susceptible reaction to the disease under present experimental conditions.

Objectives:

To find out late blight resistant or tolerant sources of potato.

Methodology:

A total of 20 exotic potato varieties ( Accent, Agila, Ajiba, Alegria, Aphrodite, Apoline, Bellini, Crips 4 all, Elgar, Karlena, Lady Olympia, Mastero, Naviga, Opera, Pamela, Sagitta, Saline, Diamant, Smart and steffi were evaluated to find out resistant source(s) against late blight pathogen (Phytophthora infestans) under artificial inoculation conditions through detached leaf method at Joydebpur, Gazipur. Detached leaf method was followed where five leaflets were taken from each variety. The leaflets were placed upside down in the screening trays. One drop of freshly prepared sporangial suspension of P. infestans (1 × 104 spores/ml) was placed at the centre of each leaflet and then incubated at 18 ±1⁰C for 5 days. Data were taken on lesion initiation hour, lesion diameter, presence of vegetative growth of the fungus and finally graded them. The scale was indexed by lesion diameter: a) below 1 cm= R, below 2 = MS, range 2.1 – 2.5= S and 2.5 and above = HS.

Achievement/Findings:

There were not found any resistant varieties against late blight under artificial conditions among the tested varieties.
