Development of Artificial Diet from Locally Available Ingredients for Shrimp (penaeus Monodon)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The highest production was found in treatment T₂ (446 kg/ha), where shrimps were fed with animal mixed diet, followed by treatment T₁ (438 kg/ha), where shrimp were fed with commercial feed. However, the differences in production between the two treatments were insignificant. The high FCR values in different treatments was due to consumption of feed by huge quantity of unwanted crabs entered into the ponds. Considering the low-cost of animal mixed feed (Tk. 25/kg), it can be contended that this feed is more suitable for the production of shrimp in the gher than that of commercial feed, which cost is about 68% higher. From this study it was also observed that growth of shrimp fed with crab meal and plant mixed diet (T₁) was highest (14.2g) followed by treatment T₂ (13.01g), where shrimps were feed with chewa and plant mixed diet. The growth of shrimp fed with shrimp meal and soybean based feed was lowest (10.12g). The results show that the crab meal could be a potential source of animal protein for shrimp culture.

Objectives:

To Develop of quality feed using different animal and plant protein ingredients; assessment of the efficacy and potential of diets with different combinations of underutilized agro-aquaculture ingredients for juvenile shrimp (P. monodon); and to develop base-lien information on nutritional quality of undesirable aquatic organisms available in brackishwater for using as food materials.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted for 15 weeks to study the efficacy of 3 different feeds viz., commercial shrimp feed- T₁ (Saudi-Bangla), mixed animal feed- T₂ (fish meal, meat and bone meal, protein conc. And plant mixed feed-T₃ (mustard oil cake, rice bran, wheat flour, soybean meal) and control-T₄ (without feed). The PL of shrimp (P. monodon) were stocked in ponds @ 2PL/m² and feed were supplied twice daily @200% of the total biomass in first week, 100% in second week, 40% in third week and gradually decreased to 5% for the rest of the culture period.

Achievement/Findings:

The purpose of this research is to determine the suitable protein source for the best growth of shrimp in particular. On the basis of these results, cost-effective quality diet will be developed. If those studies perform smoothly then we can positively evaluate the low-cost ingredients for shrimp feed without hampering normal health and growth of shrimp. The cost of the feed will than is comparatively low. If we can supply low-cost feed to the farmer, the shrimp based aquaculture production will be increased in Bangladesh. However, through this study, it could be possible to identify the undesirable but suitable aquatic organisms as a potential source of raw materials to be used by the crustacea and finfish culture industry. By achieving known value of lipid and protein of aquatic organisms, it will be helpful to formulating the nutritionally balanced diet for aquaculture industry.
