Development of Mass Seed Production and Nursery System of Galda (macrobrachium Rosenbergii) and Bagda (penaeus Monodon)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The weight gain (g) of P. monodon PL was significantly different (p<0.05) among 3 treatments as 3.24, 2.74 and 2.16 g in T₁, T₂ and T₃, respectively. In T₁ attained significantly higher (p<0.05) body length (6.91±0.438 cm), body weight (3.25±0.466 g) and survival rate 88.80% while in T3 had the lowest value. The specific growth rate (SGR%) of shrimp PL and % increase in weight (g/day) was found to be 15.57, 15.44, 15.19 and 964.4, 815.6, 624.9 in T_1, T₂ and T₃, respectively. Survival rate of P. monodon PL was significantly higher in T₁ where the stocking density was lower, but on the other hand, lower survival rate was recorded in T₃where the highest number of PL were stocked.

Objectives:

To optimize the stocking density and survival of Penaeus monodon Pl under hapa net system; and to compare the growth performance of P. monodon Pl with differtent commercial feeds under hapa net system.

Methodology:

The berried females with yellow, orange and gray eggs were selected for breeding. The collected females were disinfected with 20 ppm formalin or 5 ppm methylene blue and then stocked in the maturation tanks with gentle aeration. The spawners were fed with muscle shell, clam and small prawn etc. and then placed in hatching tanks. In the hatching tank, 5 ppm EDTA was applied to increase the hatching efficiency. The spawners were removed from the hatching tank after hatching the eggs. Initial salinity of the hatching tank was maintained 5-6 ppt and after hatching nauplii was reared up to 3-4 days in the hatching tanks and gradually salinity was increased up to 12 ppt. Three stocking densities of 50, 75 and 100 larvae/L was tested. Growth and survival of P. monodon PL under 3 different stocking densities as 100 (T₁), 150 (T₂) and 200 (T₃) PL/m³ were tested for a period of 35 days.

Achievement/Findings:

Technologies will be developed regarding role of live (algae, rotifer, brine shrimp) and artificial feed, larval rearing, water management, large-scale seed production and backyard type hatchery development. Dissemination of generated technologies at end users level will help to expend the prawn farming both in freshwater and brackishwater areas. The killing of other valuable aquatic organisms will be dwindled due to availability hatchery produced prawn post-larvae. The prawn production as well as hard currency earning will be increased and socio-economic conditions of farmers would be improved.
