Validation and Dissemination of BRRI Varieties, Drum Seeder and Leaf Color Chart in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at 5 locations of Gazipur, Norshingdhi, Satkhira and Barisal. Objectives of this study were to demonstration of the superiority of direct wet-seeded rice using drum seeder and dissemination of the DWSR technology; demonstration and dissemination of Leaf Color Chart (LCC) and dissemination of BRRI development varieties and technologies. The study showed that DWSR gave substantially higher grain yields over the conventional practice of transplanted rice (TPR) in all the locations irrespective of varieties. DWSR gave 8.42-13.58 % more grain yields over TPR. The highest yield of about 7.62 t/ha by DWSR (BRRI dhan29) was recorded at Majukhan, Gazipur, which was 12.39 % higher than that of TPR. The lowest yield under both DWSR and TPR were given by the variety BRRI dhan28 at Joypura, Pollash Norshingdhi. Direct wet-seeded rice matured 8-13 days earlier than the transplanted rice sown at the same date. LCC- based urea management resulted in 5.68 to 7.62% yield increase over the farmers’ practice at different locations. in areas where farmers usually over use urea in rice fields. As a salt tolerant variety, BRRI dhan47 showed very satisfactory performance in the saline soils of Satkhira. The yields ranged from 5.40 to 6.75 t/ha.

Objectives:

Demonstration of the superiority of direct wet-seeded rice (DWSR) using drum seeder at farmer’s level and dissemination of the DWSR technology.
Demonstration and dissemination of Leaf Color Chart (LCC) technology for judicious nitrogen management in rice field.
Dissemination of BRRI development recent rice varieties and rice based technologies.

Methodology:

Field Demonstration of Technologies: (i) On-farm demonstration of direct wet-seeded rice using drum seeder was conducted at 5 locations of Gazipur, Norshingdhi, Satkhira (2 sites) and Barisal. Seeding was done by drum seeder during 3rd week of November to mid December, 2008. Plot size for DWSR was one bigha in each spot. The land was puddled and leveled well before sowing well sprouted seeds. All fertilizers at recommended rates, except urea were applied as basal. Weeding and pest control were done by farmers in time (as and when necessary and advised by the scientists and DAE field staff). BRRI developed modern varieties (BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan47) were used in this program. Grain yield was estimated by 5 m x 2 m samples and was adjusted to 14% moisture content. (ii) Demonstration of LCC: LCC for need based urea management was demonstrated, in one bigha land (transplanted plot) in which balanced fertilizers were applied. To show the contrast of LCC, another one bigha was used for farmers’ own urea use practice. (iii) Demonstration of variety: Demonstration of BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan47 was done under drum seeding (DWSR) on one-bigha plot compared to conventional transplanting method. Standard crop management was followed.

Achievement/Findings:

The demonstration-farmers as well as the neighboring farmers were generally impressed by the superiority of DWSR technology over the conventional practices. The farmers could save about 40 to 55 kg urea per ha by using LCC, which are equivalent to about Tk. 520 to 715 per ha, (assuming the price of urea @ Tk.13/kg). The yield advantage was associated with better lodging resistance of plants and less disease and insect infestations. The technologies demonstrated under the BARC project should therefore, be popularized further for greater national interest.
