Effect of Trichoderma Concentrations on Growth and Yield of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Horticultural Farm, Department of Horticulture, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during January 2014 to March 2015, to evaluate the effects of trichoderma on growth and yield of tomato. Four different trichoderma concentrations were used as treatments, viz., T₀, control; T₁, 100 g/m²; T₂, 200 g/m² and T₃, 300 g/m² and was conducted in randomized completely block design (RCBD) with four replications. Trichoderma concentrations were showed significant variation among the growth and yield characteristics of tomato. Highest yield per plant of tomato (3.0 kg) obtained in T₁ (100 g/m²) treatment and lowest (1.4 kg) was in control. Results also revealed that T₁ (87.1%) showed the higher seedling survival rate than the control (57.9%).

Objectives:

To find out the influence of trichoderma on growth and yield of tomato as well as the most effective dose of trichoderma for tomato production.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, from January 2015 to April 2015 to asses the performance of Trichoderma on growth, yield and quality of tomato. Study was consisted in four treatments, viz., T₀, Control; T₁, 100 g/m²; T₂, 200 g/m² and T₃, 300 g/m² and laid out in completely randomized block design (RCBD) with four replications. BARI Tomato-4 was used in this experiment. 25 days aged seedling was used for transplanting in main field at the distance of 40 cm x 60 cm. The size of each plot was 160 cm². Bed was prepared by 5kg decompose cowdung, 3kg compost, 150gm urea, 100gm TSP, 100gm MoP and 20gm zinc sulphate. Trichoderma was added as different treatments at 15 days before the tomato transplanting and bed was covered with black polythene 20 days for cloning of trichoderma. Data on plant height, number of leaves, number of leaves, days to first flowering, chlorophyll percentage, number of flowers/plant, number of fruits/plant, fruit length (mm), fruit diameter (mm), fruit weight (g), total fruit weight (g/plant) were measured. Chlorophyll percentage was recorded by SPAD. Collected data were statistically analyzed using MSTAT-C computer package program. Mean for every treatments were calculated and analysis of variance for each one of characters was performed by F–test (Variance Ratio). Difference between treatments was assessed by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

From the aforementioned results, it could be revealed that trichoderma showed the significant variation with all characters of tomato. Highest yield (3.0 kg) obtained in T₁ (100 g/m²) compared to the control (1.4 kg). Results also showed that maximum survival percentage (87.1) was in T₁(100 g/m²) and minimum (57.9) found in control.
