Correlation of Fasciola Gigantica Infestation with Faecal Egg Counts in Black Bengal Goats

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The liver and faeces were collected from 77 goats ( 67 females and 10 males) slaughtered at Mymensingh abattoir and Bangladesh Agricultural University market. The number of liver flukes ( Fasciola gigantica ) per animal varied from 1 to 14 (mean =5.27 ). The number of fluke eggs per gram of faeces ( epg ) ranged from 100 to 900 ( mean =363.64 ). A good correlation ( r=0.98. P <0.05) was observed between epg and number of flukes in the liver, overall fluke and epg ratio was 1 : 76.07. In male animals the ratio was 1 : 74.36 and in female it was 1: 76.30. Histopathological changes of Fasciola infested liver have been described in brief.

Objectives:

To find out a correlation between the number of eggs per gram of faeces (epg) and the nurnbsr of adult Fasciola gigantica in the liver of goats, if any.

Methodology:

Experimental materials viz. infected livers and faeces were collected from 77 goats (67 females and 10 males) slaughtered at Mymensingh abattoir and Bangladesh Agricultural University market. Faeces were collected directly from the rectum of goats suspected to be suffering from parasitic diseases before slaughtar. After slaughter, the whole liver with gall-bladder from respective carcass was collected. The gall-bladder and large bile ducts were opened first, then the liver was sliced with a sharp knife and pressed to squeeze out the flukes. Then the sliced pieces were kept in saline and the sediment was examined for flukes. Flukes were identified following the standard key and all of them were Fasciola gigantica. Representative portions of the livers were collected in 10% formal-saline for histopathological examination. The faeces were examined using Stoll's ova counting tech nique and eggs were identified by their chara- cteristic morphological features. The well fixed liver tissues were processed. sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin following the standard procedure of Luna for histopathological studies.

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that the overall fluke and epg ratio was 1: 76.07. In case of male goats the ratio was 1: 74 36 and in female it was 1: 76.30. There was a good correlation (r=0.98. P ?0.05) between the epg counts in faeces and number of flukes in the liver.
