Farmers’ Training, Field Days and Other Promotional Activities Under BARC Project

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Sadar, Gazipur; Polash, Norshingdi and Debhata, Satkhira with the objectives to dissemination of BRRI development high yielding rice varieties and rice based technologies and to improve and update farmers’ knowledge and skill to disseminate technology rapidly. The result of this study indicate that (i) A total of 140 farmers and 20 SAAOs participated in the Trainings and updated their knowledge and skill. (ii) A total, 313 persons including farmers, DAE, public representatives, scientists and media men were participated in the events and gathered knowledge about the BRRI technologies. (iii) Two thousand Folders/Leaflets on Direct Wet-seeded rice (DWSR) were printed and distributed among farmers and SAAOs during training and field days.

Objectives:

Dissemination of BRRI development high yielding rice varieties and rice based technologies.
To improve and update farmers’ knowledge and skill to disseminate technology rapidly.

Methodology:

(i) Farmer’s Training: Farmers’ training was conducted on modern rice production technologies with emphasis on drum seeder, leaf color chart (LCC), modern varieties, cultivation methods, fertilizer and pest management etc. A group of trainees composed of 35 farmers and 5 Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAO) were trained in each batch. Production technologies were discussed with visual and audio visual aids. Demonstration of LCC was given using live specimens of rice plants. ii) Field Day: Field days were conducted in the demonstration sites. Farmers, local leaders, extension service providers and BRRI Scientists participated in this event. These were 2-3 hours events devoted to show the on-farm performance of the modern technologies (drum seeder, LCC, variety etc.). (iii) Folders/ Leaflets: Two thousand Folders/Leaflets on Direct Wet-seeded rice (DWSR) and Leaf Color Chart (LCC) were printed to distribute among the farmers and SAAOs during training and field days.

Achievement/Findings:

Direct wet-seeding of rice using Drum seeder was recognized as a very profitable technology by the farmers which increased rice yield by 8.42-13.58% and shortened crop maturity by 9-13 days. It reduced cost of cultivation substantially by reducing the amount of seeds and labour for crop establishment compared to transplanted rice. Farmers were very much impressed by the technology and showed their wishes to adopt it. Farmer’s training, weed control, supply of irrigation at the beginning of the Boro season are the preconditions for successful adoption of this technology. Large-scale demonstrations, farmers’ training, motivational tours, field visits etc. may hasten its rapid dissemination. Similarly, leaf Color chart helps in need-based N-management in rice cultivation. This helped in increasing rice yield via reducing pest pressure, crop lodging and sterility. The new rice variety BRRI dhan47 showed satisfactory yield in the salt-affected area during boro season. This would significantly contribute to increased rice production. Participatory technology transfer activities should be strengthened through large-scale on-farm demonstrations, training of farmers and extension service providers and motivational activities. BARC may allocate more funds to support the above technology transfer program.
